The Paper Road winery is a bit of a secret outside Masterton. They undertake little promotion and appear to rely largely on local knowledge for customers. Having said that the bistro was full on this sunday. An interesting mixed offering. The building itself is somewhat plain and uneventful. The interior likewise is a slightly improved version of the traditional roadside café so I guess it tends to disappoint as a destination. Beyond that the service is lovely relaxed country, and friendly, perfect for a weekend lunch. Surprisingly, given the basic ambiance, the food is really good. Sizeable portions of perfectly cooked well presented food, that you would describe as simply tasty. No element of the lunch disappointed and was well rounded off by a glass or two of their excellent Paper Road wine.Overall not the flashest bistro in the world but good food at a reasonable price.

As you drive through Masterton, on SH 2, Iberia will be to your left if you're driving South, towards, Wellington. It is in a strip-mall, across the street from a theater. The place is of modest appearance, with basic tables and chairs: no table cloths, nothing fancy. The place is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast menu offers the usual items; coffee is good. Lunch consists of a few soups, salads, and 4-5 hot dishes and sandwiches. Dinner is more elaborate, with a greater selection of appetizers and mains. Despite its name, the restaurant has no relation to Spain or Portugal. It is more a mix of New Zealand and Italian fare. The dishes are basically comfort food, generous portion and good, homey flavors.

We have tried this cafe on previous visits to Masterton and like the variety of counter food on offer. Tried and true standard items such as sandwiches, pies, and slices - nothing flash but fine for a quick lunch. Personally, I'd like the cafe to offer a variety of salads or healthier options for those who want something a little lighter. Recommend as a good coffee stop on your next visit into the city.

This place is not much to look out, outside or inside. it is a modest, neighborhood diner, with simple tables and chairs on hardwood floor. There are a few tables against the wall, where you sit on a couch. There is a big counter in the middle of the dining area where you place the order for food and beverage. If you insist, a waitstaff will come to the table to take your order, but it doesn't seem to be the routine. There are several blackboards behind the counter, listing the food being offered that day, as well as the beverages, including the various types of coffee and tea. Once the food appears, you are pleasantly surprised by the quality, the seasoning and the generous portions. We had two orders of calamari, perfectly prepared; an order of Lamb's Fry, also delicious, a burger, a steak and a fish of the day. The wines by the glass were of modest quality, but not unpleasant. Coffee was very good. Service was amateurish, but friendly. Prices were modest, considering the quality and quantity.

Not bad, just nothing exceptional either. Lamb shanks were heavy on the spice and risotto lacked salt. Service was however friendly and quick.
