Navoi Opera Theatre has daily performances at ridiculously cheap prices making it a great place to experience an opera. I was lucky to catch a rare matinee performance of one (Aleko by S.Rakhmaninov) as I always arrived late and never stayed through an evening in Tashkent. Looking around in its beautiful interior is worth the price of admission alone. The performance I caught had a good balance of singing and dancing making it interesting enough to sit through for 90 minutes.

Uzbekistan’s culture is a rich as it is multilayered, but it is truly hard to come to terms with this rich historical tapestry without the assistance of Elmiros’ Dance Theatre. This show is a brave spotlight on the many facets of Uzbek society and truly rewards the audience with a comprehension of modern day Uzbek pluralism. The delicate blend of traditional music and authentic historical garb, is both a sensory delight, as well as being a veritable journey back in time. The dancers capture the intricate motions of a bygone era with aplomb and it is a testament to the choreographer’s expertise that at no point does the show deteriorate into farce. Moreover, whilst the costumes certainly exude a sensuality, they never veer in the direction of lewdness - indeed, they consistently remain loyal to their native roots. Enhanced by subtle lighting and almost seemingly impossible outfit changes, this reviewer was left both educationally enriched and frequently astounded. No willing suspension of disbelief is required for this masterpiece. I cannot recommend this production highly enough. It was a highlight of this trip and has given me the confidence to speak to locals with a truly informed insight into their history and culture. Five stars! Thank you to my brother Mike in London for helping me write this review from our visit last year in 2019.
