An original beatnik coffee hangout which opened two weeks before the Olympic games in 1956, has been going strong ever since.
My wife and I first met in Lorne in 1965, and enjoyed romantic coffees and cinnamon toast, sitting on Arabian cushions scattered on the floor, under a billowing faux tent roof in this cafe.Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames would incessantly sing "I said Yeh Yeh, that's what I said".The place really rocked.Today it's lost all of its original character, a sign of the times I guess, oh well!Friends say the food is OK, service is OK, and the coffee is still good.

We visited this cafe ten years ago when it was the Erskine River Tea House and were excited to return to its new bright incarnation, a conversation starter that was lost on staff who were more interested in locals popping in for coffee and their morning struggles. Coffee was delicious and the eggs Benedict I had was very tasty but the bagel it was served with was a bit chewy, sourdough bread would have been better. My wife who has all sorts of allergies was catered for with a couple of poached eggs and greens but paid over the top for this minimal dish. A great location, nice decor and great coffee were the positives.

The surrounds of the Qdos cafe are amazing. The tall leafy trees typical of the area are utilised beautifully around the outdoor settings of the cafe. We visited here on a Sunday afternoon and enjoyed a delicious quinoa salad. The place was alive with customers with no one under the age of 50. Unfortunately the cliental set the vibe of the cafe to a sophisticated and exclusive level which was a shame. Another disappointment was the art around the garden was all dusty and covered in cobwebs, usually I wouldn't think anything of this but some artist is trying to sell their work for $3000 at your gallery and you can't even give it a brush down. Perfect place for a coffee and dining experience if you are over 50 from Melbourne.
