Papantla (Spanish (help·info)) is a city and municipality located in the north of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, in the Sierra Papanteca range and on the Gulf of Mexico. The city was founded in the 13th century by the Totonacs and has dominated the Totonacapan region of the state since then. This is the home of vanilla, which is native to this region, the Danza de los Voladores and the El Tajín archeological site, which was named a World Heritage Site. Papantla still has strong communities of Totonacs who maintain the culture and language. The city contains a number of large scale murals and sculptures done by native artist Teodoro Cano García, which honor the Totonac culture. The name Papantla is from Nahuatl and most often interpreted to mean "place of the papanes" (a species of crow). This meaning is reflected in the municipality’s coat of arms.

We were picked up on time by a very friendly driver. The Tour Guide was very knowledgeable, and never hesitated about answering questions that were outside the basic tour-related topics. I would recommend this tour very highly.

Amazing tour with a great guide! Our tour guide arrived to meet us on time and was super friendly and knowledgeable. The car was clean and comfy and all of the stops were interesting. Lunch was delicious too. I just wish we had more time to spend watching the monkeys (they are so cute!).
Spending the day in an ancient city, that seems to have a fixation with the ritual of the ball game, since only Cantona has more ball courts than El Tajín.

◆ Exploring the World Heritage site of El Tajín and the origin of vanilla ◆ El Tajín is a world heritage ancient city ruins with unique pyramids and ball play areas. "Tajín" means lightning and lightning in the local Totonaka language, and is said to have been built between 600 and 700 years. In Papantla, the town at the foot of the ruins, you can also see the religious ceremonial "Voladores" in which a person hanging upside down from a pillar up to 30 meters high descends while rotating toward the ground. My husband and I really enjoyed this show. I read such mixed reviews that I didn’t know if we should go, but I’m so glad we did. First and foremost, get your tickets from a reputable ticket agent. You get on a boat, but depending on where staying, there are two boats that leave from different marinas and different times. You can opt for premium service, but it’s not necessary. The evening starts with a boat ride, then you get off on an island, have dinner and watch a show. You can opt to have open bar, which is what most people do. The boat staff were great! Very friendly, funny and very accommodating. You are immediately served drinks, music is played, then the crew put on a funny dance exhibition. When you get off the boat, you walk for a bit to get to the dining areas. The walk is sandy and there are a few steeper steps, so I recommend wearing shoes to accommodate this. I had on flip flops with a good tread and had no issues, but if you are an unsteady walker, keep this in mind. The dinner was a buffet and was decent-don’t expect a gourmet meal. There were several things to choose from-salads, cheeses, beans, rice, roasted vegetables, fish, shrimp, chicken and beef. You won’t go hungry! It is not self serve, most likely due to covid. Dessert is included too. The show was very good. It’s a combination of singing, dancing and acrobatics and cool lighting, somewhat like Cirque de Soleil. Not quite at that level, but very good and very entertaining. My husband and I both really enjoyed it. The boat ride back was lots of fun. The boat staff (boat #5) put on a performance of their own, which was hilarious! I recommend this primarily for adults. There is nothing inappropriate for kids, but it’s pretty much a party boat. If you are looking for a fun excursion, I recommend it.
