So I will be honest, I didn't want to go to Pa Pae, at all. My fiance and my brother prodded me to go with them and after much discussion I reluctantly agreed. A decision that I am now very happy with. To provide some context, I'm not religious and not very spiritual so I was a little bit skeptical of what to expect at the retreat. However, it didn't take very long for me to be fully immersed in the learning experience and enjoying my time at Pa Pae. I found that the environment and natural setting were conducive to learning and created a very ambient setting. The monks at the retreat were great. They were willing to answer questions, discuss mediation techniques, and elaborate on their own experiences. I was nervous that it would be TOO monastic, but the monks were able to relate very well to everyone and provide the type of context that is fundamental for learning and integration without preaching. In fact, the monks were very accommodating and there was at no point in the retreat that I felt anything but genuine friendship with them. I will close with this, I'm not going to say I achieved some mystical spiritual awakening but I will say that I learned a lot about myself, Buddhism, and how to live more mindfully in my personal and professional life. I will continue to try and meditate because even as a skeptic, I can't deny the very tangible benefit it had on me. I highly recommend this retreat and hope you can take as much away from it as I did.

Cool unique spot where the mineral deposits on the rocks allow you to climb the waterfall. Long awkward stairway down, a bit of fun work to get up.

Feed elephants and walk with elephants to take a bath and play in mud.

I had a friend suggest this Wat to me for an interesting visit. He described it as a meeting of Buddha and Dr. Seuss and that was a completely accurate description. The intricate detail of the whimsical features are a delight to the senses. It is a large complex that is still under construction - I look forward to another visit when I am back in Thailand.

We took a boat trip on the lake to eat at a restaurant! The facilities are good at many of the “restaurants” including accommodation, water activities and more. There are families that have been granted permission to live on the lake in floating houses which are interesting to see. Most of these families rely on visitors for their income. Worth a visit!
