It was a really calm and enjoyable experience, the service was really good and breakfast was great. We missed a sunset coffee... but in general it was good. The sandy beach was clean and all people were enjoying the sun.

Brand new clean rooms, great prices, one of few places with free wi-fi, and with the cats and the many friends of the manager, Hasan, there is always a buzz about the place that makes you feel like family. Hasan will do everything he can to show and recommend places in Latakia. And Latakia is the one place in Syria where when the sun goes down, the central area comes alive with young Syrians fraternizing in the many splendid restaurants and cafes.

I came across Al-Nour only because my original choice of Al Atlal had closed down in the past year, and my taxi driver took me elsewhere unpleasant (a hotel called Al Hayat) and saw the Al Nour just across the street. The Al-Nour is a good, no-frills business hotel that is a five-minute walk from the main square (it’s very close to the Al Riad), and at S£1900 a night for a twin-room for one person, represents fairly good value for what it offers. I requested a room for one person for one night at the back of the hotel on the third floor which looks over an army barrack. The room itself was clean, quiet, and the air-con worked perfectly. There’s also the obligatory cable TV and a fridge in the room – all of which makes the hotel fairly comfortable. The bathroom could’ve been a bit cleaner, and the shower curtain might as well be dispensed given how cramped everything was there. Thankfully, the hot water that was promised 20 hours a day was pretty much there, and I didn’t really experience anything that would suggest that it is a terrible choice. Yes, it’s not very exciting, but it does its job. Main thing is it’s safe, quiet, cheap, comfortable and close to the main square. No internet, and breakfast is £S50 extra (it’s so-so)
