While the Boltwood Inn is in a good location in central Amherst, that is about all it has going for it. I paid a lot of money, and discovered I had been given one of the basement rooms. There were two tiny windows in the room, but I had to use the drapes to cover these windows at all times due to heavy foot traffic passing by (I could see people's feet above me from those windows). Fundamentally, I was paying the same price as others who were provided much nicer rooms, and I even heard one guest upon arrival ask for a room somewhere outside of the basement area. It was also a challenge to find my rooom upon my arrival, as there was a labyrinth of stairs and hallways to navigate. No one from the hotel assisted me in finding my room. Incredibly, my room did not have even a small refrigerator, so some food I had brought with me had to be discarded. The TV in the room was very old and almost impossible to figure out the channel settings -- I just gave up and used my laptop. All in all, a very unsatisfying experience, particularly for the price paid. Next time I am in Amherst, I will rent an airbnb.

The Old Mill is a historic building located in the town of Hatfield, just a few miles from downtown Northampton. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In January 2021, new owners undertook a complete renovation of the building, opting for a chic, “urban industrial” feel. The new design provides guests with an upscale, modern experience while remaining true to the industrial heritage of the Inn and surrounding area. The Mill River still runs through the building, while many rooms feature breathtaking views of the waterfall.
In this refurbished mill, no detail has been to small to be overlooked by these creative owners. We absolutely loved our queen sized room. It was just beautiful, but not at all in a traditional “b and b” way. It was so unique…the decor was chic industrial and each and every piece of furniture, hook, lamp, chair, painting, etc, was part of the reason the room was so wonderful. Comfortable, calm, interesting, and different from every place we have stayed! The beautiful bathroom had everything we needed. There were lots of lamps, plus natural light. There was a wireless charger or two for phones, too. As it was Easter Sunday when we checked out, the cafe staff had the day off, but there was coffee and a large selection of pastries for us to enjoy in the cute cafe. We will definitely return. A bonus is that it is very close to Northampton.

We recently stayed at this lovely Bed n Breakfast and embraced its historic charms while attending a wedding in South Hadley. This property offers all the expected amenities: comfy bed, soothing shower and dependable wi-fi. It also boasts a great location with a dandy little shopping area that boast fine restaurants, gift shops and even a cinema. Also, within walking distance is the celebrated Mt. Holyoke College. The school's tree-lined, manicured grounds just beg you to stroll around the deep green lawns. The best reason to recommend this property is the amiable, hard-working team of Ruth and Richard who make you feel welcome for your entire stay. I'm kinda stingy with five-star reviews but wholeheartedly award all five to Daniel Stebbins House.

We stayed at the Allen house that is associated with Amherst Inn. It is a lovely 18 room house with lots of neat rooms and wonderful furniture. We stayed in a room called Peach which as great solid wood furniture. Not overly cute Victorian. Very comfortable bed. Had a great night's sleep. If you hear a little traffic on Main Street ask the innkeeper to shut the window. There’s a specific way to do that that makes a big difference. What made the stay really incredible was speaking with the innkeeper. He loves the house, which came into his family from his grandmother who was a servant in the house for 40 years! Ask him to tell you the story. He is enamored of the house and its multiple legacies. We had a reasonable breakfast. Eggs any number of ways prepared. We liked the omelettes that we had. Homemade banana bread as well as yogurt are part of the offering. Breakfast was at the Amherst Inn itself, which seems to have very nice rooms and is directly opposite the Emily Dickinson house. We had a memorable and nice stay. We recommend it highly.
