At the top of Bavaria and dating back to at least the 11th century, Coburg sat undiscovered by many late 20th century tourists, surrounded as it was on three sides by the former East Germany. The town’s main attraction, impossible to miss since it overlooks the town, is the 13th century Veste Coburg Castle, one of Germany’s largest and most beautiful. Sometimes called the Franconian Crown, today it’s home to three museums. Reformer Martin Luther, then an outlaw, spent five months here in 1530.

This is a no frills hotel without an front desk and no elevator. But it was quiet and my room was large and well appointed. The bathroom was just fine. The location could not have been better. What is not to like? For some people it is a bit of a rabbit warren - no long hallways with uniform rooms. The literature says there is a common area wash machine and dryer but I could not find it. It is in a pedestrian zone and the parking is a few hundred yards away. On the other hand, I ended up paying 2 Euros for the parking place. So I would stay here again. For what it is, it is excellent. It is NOT a 4, 3 or 2 star hotel.

My wife and I stayed here for the second time visiting Coburg and the fortress, Veste Coburg (http://www.kunstsammlungen-coburg.de/en/index.php). Hotel - Gasthof Löhnert is located in an easy to find, quiet neighborhood just west of downtown Coburg. The rooms are very clean and the beds are very comfortable. My wife and I slept well! The downstairs restaurant serves a wonderful Frühstück and other delicious meals - I could easily get very fat eating meals here! Hotel - Gasthof Löhnert is an easy 8 minutes from downtown Coburg and 14 minutes to the fortress and museum, Veste Coburg. When visiting Coburg, you have to visit the historic, downtown marketplace and try the legendary Coburger Bratwurst with Brötchen and Senf!!! It's excellent with a local pilsner!

Für Coburg-Besichtigung ideale Lage. Saubere durchschnittlich ausgestattete Zimmer zu vernünftigem Preis. Gutes reichliches Frühstück auch unter corona-Bedingungen. Sonderwünsche werden gerne erfüllt. Gasträume in gediegenem altdeutschem Stil. Besondere Erwähnung bedarf das außergewöhnliche Engagement der Hotel-Leitung. Das ist weit über dem Durchschnitt- hoffentlich bleibt es so, die Leitung ist erst seit einem dreivierteljahr im Einsatz

This is a very attractive hotel. We had a very odd-shaped room but it had a lot of charm, also parking and a good location. The only issue with this hotel is the complete absence of reception staff at any time. In this price range it really is necessary to have some kind of presence at least at some point of the day/evening.

Four of us enjoyed an excellent lunch here - the main courses being liver in a beer sauce, a pork schnitzel, a pork steak and marinated beef in a horse radish sauce - all excellent. Being also a very old brewery, the Grosch offered a wide range of beers brewed there. We would definitely go there again given the opportunity.
