Birka and Hovgarden

Here at Bjorko, in the middle of lake Malaren, Birka town was based during the 750's and is today known as Sweden's first city. To this day there are visible traces of the people who were born and who lived and died here. Today Birka is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites and has several important ruins and offers seasonal reenactments of Viking life. Birka is also a beautiful island with a historical landscape, perfect for a stroll or a refreshing swim. Restaurant Sarimner offers meals and drinks and the museum gives you an insight the the life of the Vikings that lived here.

We were very hesitant to consider a visit to Birka. Knowing we would be coming in early May, there was a major worry about how the weather might affect our trip since it is mostly an outdoor experience. But in the end, we decided to go and are very happy we did. We took the first boat ride of the 2019 season! The top deck of the boat was freezing once we got moving across the lake, but we were able to move inside the boat where it was warm. Just take note it is always going to be cooler on the boat. The weather on the island was nice, it just required a light jacket. The main attractions include a small museum, a walking tour of the ruins (which aren’t much more than simple mounds) and a recreation of a Viking village. Because we were so early in the season, we knew the village would be void of actors and mostly “closed,” but we were able to walk around the exteriors of the buildings. Our one disappointment is that the Viking boats weren’t floating in the water yet, but rather sitting on a trailer nearby. The walking tour was very cool! Although the ruins aren’t much more than mounds, the history they represent is well worth the visit. The museum is a must and full of so much information. We actually felt too rushed and ended up just taking a bunch of photos so we could read the information at a later date. Birka is a must for any visit to Sweden, especially if you have any interest in the Viking period! My advice to future travelers is: Take a jacket, even if the weather seems okay. Be sure you take advantage of every minute on the island–those three hours go very quickly. And I suggest eating on the boat rather than waiting to eat once you arrive on the island so you have more time for exploring. I would only avoid a trip to Birka on two conditions, one being if you know the weather is going to be bad (I wouldn’t think it would be a great experience in the rain) or if your trip to Sweden is very short. Including the boat ride, the trip takes an entire day and when you return to Stockholm most other attractions will be closed for the day.

S:t Olofs Church Ruins

One of Sweden's oldest stone churches, St. Olof's dates back to the 12th century.

Sigtuna is Sweden's oldest town, dating back to Erik the Victorius time (pre-1000). It's not a surprise that it has a number of ruins then. St Olof's Ruin happens to be one of them and it has a cemetery, too. It is the ruins closest to Mariakyrkan (the church) and to the Församlingsgården Munken (meeting venue connected to the parish). I wish I can attend a guided tour of this place someday. I am already impressed with what I could see, but I imagine there are even more interesting facts to know. Yes, there are small info boards around and I have read them, but I am convinced there are more to know. Will visit again.
