During World War II, three American naval ships were shipwrecked in a winter storm and miners from the nearby Newfoundland towns of St. Lawrence and Lawn rushed to the scene to rescue 186 oil-covered sailors. The USS Truxtun and USS Pollux were smashed on the rocks and lost, killing 203 men. The USS Wilkes managed self-rescue and eventually sailed away without any fatalities. Laurentian Legacy Tours takes people to Chambers Cove to see where the Truxtun was lost and to tell the story of the disaster and rescue. The guided hiking tour is a lively exchange with the participants. Along the trail to Chambers Cove we discuss the many topics that impacted the story; the American buildup to World War II, German U-Boat patrols, fishing history, the Great Tidal Wave, local mining, local geology, and the Great Depression It is important to know the factors that shaped the people to better understand their story. Its all about people overcoming massive challenges and thriving.

My husband and I were the only ones in the museum one morning in August. We wore our masks, as is a requirement in NL right now and the staff person showed us around. Such a friendly and knowledgeable lady! She first explained about the US Truxtun and Pollux sea disaster in 1942, the miners helped rescue some of the crew off the rocky cliffs. Then we were able to see the story of the mine and the miners and the hardships they had, including disease from the fluorspar they mined. Such a gem of a place, and so glad we stopped to visit!
