Visited Palymra in 2000 and in 1997. Given the recent events, I felt obligated to write on it. Having visited 75 or so countries, Palmyra and the Grand Canyon are my two most favorite sites in the world. It is very difficult to believe, as you drive towards Palmyra, what you will stumble upon. The site is enormous, the lack of crowds refreshing, the kindness of the locals incredible. The history is incredible: Roman, Arab, Christian, Muslim - usually all in one building! There is/was a motel in the middle of the site; the tables in the courtyard were Corinthian capitals - perhaps an archeologist's nightmare but what a unique way to have breakfast.
I will miss not being able to take my children to see its grandeur.

The Famous Archaeological Site of Palmyra has always been the top tour site in all of Syria. The old Roman Amphitheater was always a high light of every tour
Unfortunately today it is being destroyed by the terrorist Group called: Daesh or ISIL.
I have been blessed to have visited Palmyra many time over the past 40+ years.
You had always needed two or three days to really appreciate the full site.
Today it is off limits due to the occupation of Palmyra!
We all hope and pray that the remaining Archaeological Site will be spared from further destruction!

Perched high atop the mountain it rests on overlooking the truly marvellous Palmyra, the Muslim Castle is a superb cap to the extraordinary adventure that is the historic site of Palmyra.
It dominates the landscape and constantly reminds the visitor of the remarkable heritage of this area with its enormous Roman ruins overlooked by an Islamic Castle.
The drive up to the top of the mountain is worth the effort because from there not only can you see the castle at first hand but you gain a wonderful perspective of the historic site below.

This hotel was ok but not remarkable. It was situated very well nearby the ruins and the central street with souvenir shops and restaurants (We really liked the restaurants Pancake House and Casa Mia). Breakfast was served for us alone and when we left very early the second morning, breakfast was packed to take with us.

Guidebooks to Palmyra, Syria (notably the Lonely Planet) greatly under-rate the Palmyra Museum in Palmyra. Certainly much more modest than the museum in Damascus, it nevertheless has a fine collection of rare objects: notably lifelike and very expressive images of the dead in the local tombs.
