My daughter and I have paddled the Kicckapoo about 6 times now over the past years. We started when she was 12. I am 64 now and she is 20. Every time it is a little different but always beautiful. If there has been a lot of rain the river is higher and flows faster and a bit more difficult to navigate for novice canoes and kayaks. We had to help several people who had tipped over and retrieve their boats and paddles as the current continues to carry items downstream. Tubes would be a better option in this case. If the water is lower it's slower and much easier to paddle. We have an inflatable 3 person kayak and take our dog along for the paddle. If there is no retrieving equipment for other people, we can paddle to landing 5 in about 4 hours with leisurely paddling. Estimate 45 min to a hour between landings. We always use Kickapoo Wild Adventures( just north of Ontario) for rentals and shuttle. They are high quality, accommodating and affordable. Shawn, the owner, can help you with your decisions for a safe and fun trip. We love tent camping at Wildcat Mountain State Park as it is a 21/2 hour drive for us. We always love our little excursions there. I'm sure you will too!

I like Wildcat Mountain for its views of Kickapoo River and steep hikes that give you good workout. No real mountains here, but hills are very formidable, like elsewhere in the Driftless region. However, deep shade from the trees mitigates the heat, and makes you hike tolerable and even pleasant. There is a Stat Natural Area within the park, with outstanding natural features.
