This impressive red drum tower, located in the middle of a busy roundabout in central Linfen, is the second tallest drum tower in China. (At 43.75 meters tall, it is just a bit shorter than the one in Beijing.) Also known as Dazhonglou, this magnificent square tower was built in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The structure has been damaged by several major earthquakes and has been rebuilt a number of times. The foundation is original, but the main wooden structure was completely rebuilt (to the earlier design) in 1984 after having been damaged in 1948 during the Chinese Revolution. This drum tower is supported by 12 massive wooden pillars, each one meter in diameter. The building contains no nails and is held together by a series of interlocking wooden pieces. The tower is several floors tall, and visitors are permitted to climb to the top, where they can enjoy a nice view out over the city, including of the eight-sized pagoda at Dayun Temple nearby. The drum on display on the lower floor is not the original one, but the bell on display in some 800 years old.Location: The Linfen Drum Tower (Dazhonglou) is located on Gulou Xi Dajie in central Linfen.
The drum tower is one of the main features you can see in Linfen. It stands out among all of the city. The tower is really close to Shanxi Normal University and to some major shopping areas. It is nice to look at in the day time but the view of it is better at night. They light the entire tower up at night with lots of lights. During the Chinese New Years the temple even gets flags and even more lights to help it look even more awesome. If your ever in Linfen this is a sight you need to see.

The buildings were not ancient buildings. There are not much buildings inside and nothing to see. I hired a guide for introduction of the buildings. The guide took me in the temple, and one man asked me to pray, and was forced to pay RMB10. After that I was mislead to write down some words for pray and was asked to pay a few hundred dollars. I realized it was a trap and refused to pay. The guide just stood aside and kept silent. Although I insisted on not paying any money, I was forced to pay another RMB10. It was unbelievable that the guide help them to cheat tourist!

The gate itself is a new structure, much like a lot of building in the area close by. It is worth taking a trip inside and climbing the steps to the top. There are some interesting decorations and sculptures.
