Cedar Rock State Park is the home to the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Lowell and Agnes Walter Estate. The property is a complete and beautiful example of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian design meaning that Wright is as much the interior designer as he was the architect. Those that tour the home experience it almost as if the homeowners stepped out in 1950. The estate is comprised of four Wright designed structures which include the house, council fire, river pavilion, and formal entrance gate. Guided tours of the property depart the visitor center hourly from 10:00 am-3:00 pm Thursday to Sunday's from late May to mid-October.
I am a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and never even knew this house existed in Iowa. We spotted the signs on the way to working in the area for a weekend and made time to stop on our way back. Anyone who loves his architecture should make this a Must-do if you are in this area! As with many of his creations, this one is not wearing well, but just to walk on the same floors as he walked and see art pieces he had placed JUST where he wanted them was an experience for me. Loved it!

This 1870 grist mill is located along the Wapsipinicon River in downtown Independence. It was originally used as a flour mill. Then in the mid 1900's it switched to milling livestock and poultry feed. The mill is 6 stories tall, has an 8 inch thick brick exterior and an interior made of hand-hewn timbers held together with square nails and wooden pegs. Inside are the original millstones, belt & bucket elevators, grain storage bins, shafts, milling equipment and milling tools . The mill is owned by the Buchanan County Historical Society. Self-guided tours are free but donations to help restore the mill are appreciated. It's open mid-May through mid-September, Tues - Sun, noon to 4pm. See their website for info on the mill's history, current hours, etc.

A beautiful historic home with lots of history and beauty. It stands a bit off the street next to the new library, but there's a beauty to it. If you're in the area take a tour.

it was a nice locals kind of bar. A cozy atmosphere and the service was nice. Decent drinks and the prices were reasonable. Certainly nothing fancy, but it was nice.
