Gotha (German: [ˈɡoːtaː]) is the fifth-largest city in Thuringia, Germany, located 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of Erfurt and 25 km (16 miles) east of Eisenach with a population of 44,000. The city is the capital of the district of Gotha and was also a residence of the Ernestine Wettins from 1640 until the end of monarchy in Germany in 1918. The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha originating here spawned many European rulers, including the royal houses of the United Kingdom, Belgium, Portugal (until 1910) and Bulgaria (until 1946).

Great views of the city and interesting history. The castle is in various stages of restoration, so it's not a gorgeous place... yet. I do know this was the former East Germany, and resources were very scarce for decades, so I take in the condition with that in mind. It's worth visiting if you're in the area. Easy to find, easy to park.

We visited this museum today and were pleasantly surprised at the excellent presentation of a wide variety of collectables of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. A few choice items were displayed in the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Chinese and Japanese rooms as well as sculptures and paintings upstairs. We thought it was well worth the 5 euro admission and were impressed that nearly all the exhibits had English explanations as well as German. We can also recommend the cafe for a tasty bowl of soup.

The design of the place, beer, service and location are quite nice. I had custom-made beer as well which was really delicious.

In 4 rooms on 100 sqaure meters we offer a mix of new and a constantly growing number of used books of all genres mostly in German language to browse and buy. Some walls are used as micro-gallery for exhibiting our self-created paintings. Even we are some minutes off the city center it's always worth a visit in the mostly sunny Waltershäuser Straße to browse our shelfs for a good catch.

We had to kill some time before we moved on to the next destination during our trip, so we stopped at this small zoo in Gotha. I was somewhat skeptical first, but I was pleasantly surprised. Five euro per adult person may be a little too much, but they had some unique animals here. The pack of wolves and dingos (separate habitats, of course); Siberian tiger, many birds especially lots of different types of owls, some monkeys and baboons, etc. Pelikans, peacocks and roosters roamed freely, and pelikans were very people-friendly and entertaining. They also had quite a few llamas and goats. This would be a great place to come with young children.
