When entering the small town of Fossil, the County Seat of Wheeler County, it took a while driving in circles to find the free dig site behind the Wheeler High School. A welcome relief was the port-a-potty in the parking lot of the School. The donation box is to the right of the trail up do the digging grounds. The trail is very thin as it head up to the hill. The digging site is fenced off and has signs of where not to dig. As this was my first trek for fossil hunting, I hammered away not knowing I was probably obliterating fossils. After a few hours I was hot, discouraged and ready to leave when a woman asked me what I had found. When I responded, “nothing” she produced her many finds. I parked where she led me and found myriad fossils but the rock was very fragile. I had been trying too hard – they were there for the picking. I stayed until nightfall and had a delightful first fossil hunting trip. So put your rock hammer away and enjoy the fossil finds at Fossil, Oregon.

Park has three sections- the Painted Hills the most picturesque and worthwhile . Five hiking trails in the painted hills section- shortest 1/4 miles, longest 1.6 mi round trip. TIP- start at the back of the park and work your way forward- saving the best walks for last. Consider a late afternoon visit into evening for softer light and shadows. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen!
