Elsecar Heritage Railway is South Yorkshire's only Heritage Railway. Currently operating on a one mile section of track, passengers are pulled by a selection of steam and diesel engines, with a variety of coaching stock. Run entirely by a team of volunteers, the main operating day is a Sunday. Day ticket prices are £5 adult, £4 concessions and £2.50 children (3-16) (Different prices may occur for special events)
Received 1 hour footplate experience as a gift ... well you rarely buy such things for yourself. Comms over booking were good, plenty of opportunity to match my availability with theirs by email. The railway is part of a larger heritage centre and we arrived on same day as Farmers market and there was plenty to do with antique shops etc as well as trains. Volunteer staff were very helpful and we were told exactly where to be at what time. Experience included 2 free tickets to ride the train ahead of my go. The experience is shared with another and you take turns to operate the controls and feed the boiler. Chatty friendly staff from start to finish and whilst the track is indeed rather short it was a great day out with plenty of photo opportunities along the way.
