Fort Benton is a city in and the county seat of Chouteau County, Montana, United States. Established in 1846, a full generation before the U.S. Civil War, Fort Benton is one of the oldest settlements in the American West; in contrast, many other places—including large cities today—were settled in the late 1860s, 1870s, or 1880s. The city's waterfront area, the most important aspect of its 19th-century growth, was designated the Fort Benton Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, in 1961.

We had fun to explore the past in Fort Benton. They covered from 1932 to 1914. They used railroads and someone wrote: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Depression storms were very dangerous. They called it rollers. In the farms they used Arsenic and DDT. They used They had weather stations. Very important. We saw how they dressed, what they did. What was fun! They were row cropping. They had a small village to help the tourists how they lived in the houses and what was inside. We saw all kinds of homes. We saw wooden homes. They used wagons. We entered in homes to see how they lived. There was a school and a church. We saw a bank, a prison, a city hall, alcohol and medicine. We learned a lot here. It was quite different in the past. Worthwhile to see! Sometimes I wish I could live in the past.

If you like old bridges . . . . Also enough signs and placards to tell the bridge's story. Great views up and down the Missouri River. Walk across and back -- there is no public exit at the far end.

We visited the whole Missouri Breaks National Monument Interpretive Center. We learned a lot. There would be way more to share in this museum. They had all the wild animals stuffed naturally/ There were skulls as well. We saw things from the past: A wagon, a bear, fish, a ram. They also covered the American Indians. I learned about the Gold Rush in 1869. Sorry, there is no more gold. Then we went outside and we had a beautiful river and mountains. Wow! Our guide gave us many attractions to visit. We liked that. This was really worthwhile. A must see!

Located in Fort Benton "The Birthplace of Montana"™ the Heritage Complex is the home of Old Fort Benton, The Museum of the Upper Missouri, The State of Montana's Museum of the Northern Great Plains, Homestead Village, The Hornaday Smithsonian Buffalo Gallery, The Upper Missouri River Breaks Interpretive Center, The Overholser Research Center, The Schwinden Library, and The Montana Agricultural Center.
For the price you were allowed to go into 2 museums and galleries which were packed full of history. We enjoyed finding additional postings of history and statues along the levee walk and the views of the Missouri River. Go to the end of the walking bridge shaded with trees for a leisurely stroll over the River. We want to go back to this beautiful town. I was planning a year out so I appreciated the quick response I received from the website on details on ticket prices.
