From high up on the cliffs of Taormina, the black sand beaches off to the far right on the horizon beckon. After two weeks of phenomenal beach visits from Ortigia, Castellammare, Cefalù, and beyond, the insatiable traveler has to keep one’s bathing suit handy in the carry-on for one more final swim on the way to the airport in Catania Lungomare Di Acitrezza is heavenly. Sicily beaches have taught me well. First, locate a ladder and then jump in!

The beach is composed of big stones. I recommend to go to the part of the beach on the "corner" where there is a view point to the rocks and to the castle in the neighbour town. In this part you don't pay any fee, the entrance to the see is not so stony, because the water is deeper. It is recommended to take goggles with you because the water is crystal clear with many fish. Alhough the beach is not so comfortable beacuse of the stones, it is really nice place with beautiful view. You can go there from Catania by public bus for 1€, 45 min ride.

This small sea side town is the absolute place to be to immerse yourself in Sicilian/Italian culture. Me and my family never heard anyone else speaking English the whole time we were there. There is no sand here, just rocks but there are four or five platforms, kind of like piers which allow you easy access for swimming and sunbathing. The locals call them lidos and it’s about €10 for all day access plus umbrella and lounger. A few nice cocktail bars, many restaurants, all largely fish based are the mainstay at night. Young people queue for granita with brioche at cafes in the daytime. You can easily walk to the next town, Aci Castello along the promenade in about 15 mins and visit it’s Norman castle which is amazing. The views from that and the village itself are gorgeous. The sea here is very very clear. We took trips by taxi to Castelmola (hilltop village), Taormina (with cable car to beach). And then on another day, Mount Etna plus a wine tasting at the Nicosia winery near Catania. On yet another day, we went to Catania historic centre, Duomo, and so on. Special mention to the taxi firm Sea Bus of Catania. Sebastiano especially, but also Nicola and everyone. A very professional firm with friendly, helpful, people who act as tour guides as they go along! The weather was very hot indeed, perfect for swimming but probably not city walking around. My favourite holiday for a good while.

It was a nice surprise and a very delightful experience. The Casa del Nespolo is a small privately owned museum in the very center of Acitrezza run by volunteers. It is small, just two rooms and a nice garden, but it gives you a good idea how the people, especially the people living from fishing have lived and worked during the last century. It is filled with many of the tools the fishermen have used. The reason for the existence of the museum is the purported stay of the famous Italian writer Giovanni Verga is this house or a very similar one, as the tree in the garden, which gives this house its name (casa del nespolo) is mentioned in Verga´s novel "I Malavoglia". By the way this name (House of the medlar tree) is also the name under which this novel has been published in English. Part of the novel has also been put into well known a film by Visconti in 1948 (La terra trema) which he staffed mostly with local people from. Photos taken during the shooting of the film adorn the walls of this small museum. The staff is extremely helpful and enthusiastic and tries to answer all your questions about what is known about the writers stay in this house, the shooting of the film, and the life of the people of in the last century. I think it is a must for every visitor of Acitrezza interested at least a bit in the history of this place & people.
