Our first view of Vardzia took our breathe away. Originally, this medieval cave city was invisible from the road but an earthquke has left the remaining half exposed and it makes a very dramatic scene. It is impossible to visit all the caves in one day but, if you follow the main path through you will see examples of dwellings, wineries, stores, churches and meeting halls that certainly give a good flavour of what life must have been like. I recommend the 1 lari (about 30pence) bus ride up to the caves from the ticket office because the climb is very strenuous. You can book a return but we came down through the steep, very low tunnels and had back-ache for two days! Nonetheless, an excellent experience.

The Fortress (Castle) of Rabati, located on the left bank of the Potskovi River, was one of the most amazing sites that we visited during our trip to Georgia. Renovated by the Ottoman rulers around 17th and 18th centuries. A great place for a tour and enjoy the wonderful gardens and the beautiful buildings as well as the wonderful view from the roof of the castle and the walls that surrounds this amazing site. NOT 2 B MISSED.

The park is famous for its mineral water and is the main attraction of the city. There is a small tourist oriented market and some hotels just outside the park entrance. Inside the park is a bottling plant for bottled water, a restaurant and bar, a mineral water fountain, the Prometheus monument and a hiking path which leads to the sulphur baths about three kilometers up the trail. Across the river is a small was museum which also other curiosities like a butterfly collection and a relief map of Georgia. There are beautiful gardens at the entrance to the park. A green pavilion with a transparent dome has the mineral water fountain where you can fill up your own bottle or drink the mineral water from a plastic cup provided by an attendant. A cable car leads up the mountain where you can enjoy the excellent views and also visit some local attractions. You can also hire a golf cart to take you around the park. However, it only takes you as far as the paved road goes and not all the way to the sulphur baths. A small stream flows through the park and there are several bridges across the stream. Each bridge has its own unique handrail and construction including an Eiffel bridge with a handrail similar in design to the Eiffel tower and a Lover's bridge. There are many snack carts and children's rides in the park and the children will enjoy it the most. The park is entirely covered in dense forests and there are many hiking trails in the park as well. The mineral water from the park is supposed to be good for health. It tastes OK fresh from the spring but not so good after a few hours. If you just want the mineral water, there is a spring outside the park as well. The park has a small entrance fee which is waived if you are staying in some of the hotels in Borjomi. You do have to show your hotel card though to avail of the free entrance. The park is beautiful and definitely worth a visit if you are in Borjomi. Make sure to visit the sulphur baths as well.
