Pumpkinvine Nature Trail

Reviewed By ChrisL872 - Niles, United States

We began in Shipshewana and rode to Goshen, then back. Total of about 32 miles. This is an incredible trail with smooth surfaces, several rest areas, good signage and exceptional maintenance. The trailheads are spacious and convenient. This is primarily for biking, but a speed limit is imposed to force riders to appreciate the scenery and not to intimidate casual riders. Much is in shaded areas, so even on a warm day, it is comfortable. We have biked on many trails in the Midwest and this one tops them all. You will be on a blacktop county road for about a mile, but the locals are used to seeing bicyclists, so that is not a problem. The last two miles into Goshen is crushed rock, but still fairly smooth. Rest of trail is blacktop and in excellent condition.

These hand-crafted baskets are amazing! We visited their little shop, located between Middlebury & Shipshewana (not hard to find at all). Almost all of the work is done by the Amish lady who owns it & a couple of younger Amish girls who work with her (when they have really big, heavy pieces of wood to handle, a couple of Amish guys do that for them). Besides baskets, 1 of the girls does exquisite scroll saw work. I bought 2 baskets & 1 scroll saw item. Considering the quality & attention to detail, prices are very reasonable. I much prefer Teaberry baskets to the Sonshine baskets (which are more of a traditional woven basket) because the Teaberry baskets are more heavy-duty & have a nice, thick wooden rim around the top with built-in handles. Also with the Teaberry baskets, no 2 are exactly alike & each basket is signed, numbered & dated by the maker. If you are interested in Amish baskets, this place most definitely deserves a look!

We have traveled from Chicago area a number of times to experience their live theater. We keep going back! Looking forward in 2020 to their Live Easter Musical: Cotton Patch Gospel. We now have a great place to meet up with family living in Michigan who had never been to live theater or concerts, but are now loving it. Our visits with family are topped off at Essenhaus with an enjoyable dinner and a comfortable nights stay. The people there are so friendly and accommodating. Once when we were running very late (Chicago traffic) and couldn't contact family we were meeting for the show, the hotel and restaurant hunted them down in the gift shops and even gave our dinner (we had paid for ahead) to them as they waited for us. We missed that meal together, but made it just in time for the show. Its more than entertainment, its an experience!

Came upon this little public park while riding the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, a beautiful non-motorized multiuse trail, between Goshen and Shipshewana. It has a little man-made waterfall, many mature shade trees, and lots of meticulously maintained flower beds. It is also has one of a total of 16 "quilt gardens" on the Heritage Trail Driving Tour which has an audio guide available for free at the Elkhart County Visitor Center. This is an insider tip for a romantic date!

Wonderful cider being sold in a beautiful countryside old mill. The owners are very helpful, friendly, and full of knowledge that they willingly share regarding the apple cider process. Another Indiana treasure.
