although my portuguese isn't great to say the least,i arrived at the very commanding palace on a bit of a wing and a prayer just before mid day.the lady at reception was very friendly and booked me in for the mid day tour in portuguese as i'd already missed the 11 a.m tour in english but as i was the only one doing this tour the guide was good enough to do it in english for me and what a privilege it was and one soon learnt the more questions i asked the more he opened up to me and made this one hour guided tour all the more special.

Convent of Chagas (Vila Vicosa)

We stayed here for four nights as part of a tour of Pousadas, and really enjoyed our stay. This Pousada is rich in history and has been very sensitively adapted to be a comfortable hotel with welcoming lounges and friendly staff. It's also a good base for exploring Vila Vicosa and the Evora area. While you are here, be sure to visit the Marble Museum, which is next to LIDL.

Marble Museum

Our visit to this museum has been the highlight of our stay in Vila Vicosa. It contains numerous exhibits describing the extraction and the transformation of marble in the area of Vila Vicosa, Borba and Estremoz, which is one of the highest quality seams of marble in the world. The friendly custodian took us on a tour of the museum, and gave excellent explanations of the qualities of marble and the extraction and transformation processes. The information available is quite fascinating and well presented in this modern museum. There are some quite stunning modern marble sculptures on display in the museum. Outside, there are exhibits of old mining machinery, and a view into an exhausted marble quarry. The visitor map of the town shows this museum at the old railway station, where it used to be located. It's now next to the LIDL supermarket. Don't miss visiting here when you are in Vila Vicosa.
