The Ferry Tram ran along Mends St to Mary Street from 1922 to 1950. The tram carried boisterous South Peth holiday makers to Como Jetty and Perth Zoo. Intent on having a day out, for children the Ferry Tram trip was half the fun.. Although the tram stopped running long ago, older residents of South Perth will recall the tram lines on which the "ferry tram "ran. The faithfully restored tram is now in the new "tram barn" in Windsor Park, a short walk from Mends St Jetty in South Perth's "Heritage Area."

South Perth Foreshore is just a five minute Transperth Ferry ride from the City centre and Elizabeth Quay. There is a train station situated right next door to the ferry terminal at Elizabeth Quay. So, after touring the City of Perth why not jump on the ferry for a relaxing ride over to South Perth and relax on the beautiful foreshore with great views across the river to the Perth City skyline. There is an abundance of dining choices for all budgets in Mend Street, South Perth, plus its only a short stroll to Perth Zoo.

The Swan River Colony was founded in 1829. The mill in South Perth was established in 1835, and functioned until 1859, milling prodigious quantities of grain throughout its lifetime. Without the mill, the struggling infant colony would not have survived. Perth, now a thriving city of 2 million, can take pride in this link to the pioneering settlement of Western Australia. After two years' of restoration, the Old Mill has reopened. The oldest surviving connection to Perth's early days is a source of pride to the people of South Perth. The restored mill and the miller's cottage are are on the tip of the South Perth peninsula. They can be accessed by car; the bus stops outside the door.

The face lift the City of South Perth has done is fantastic. The new mends street jetty area is extremely family friendly. Check out the Emu and Meerkat statues, sit, relax and enjoy the river and city views or grab a coffee, drink or meal at one of the great restaurants nearby. Miss Chow’s is my favourite.

Another underpromoted destination in Perth is Point Belches, which has a gorgeous riverfront with beaches and well manicured gardens to have a picnic on. Glorious fusion of nature and the urban cityscape!
