Grant was our guide for Yellowstone Safari Co.'s Private Tour - Winter Wildlife Safari, a day-long private tour that used the park's winter access roads to see Yellowstone in the off season. A biologist by training with over 20 years experience in exploring and explaining wildlife, Grant was an outstanding host and guide. Throughout the day he brought to our attention packs of wolves (resting from a recent successful hunt), bald eagles and ravens (who pointed out the location of the hunt), coyotes (who waited patiently for their turn at the kill), pronghorns (frequently misidentified as antelopes), big horn sheep, two bull moose, and countless herds of elk and bison. The tour included a short and relaxed hike to the boardwalks above the steaming hydrothermal features and travertine terraces in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of the park (pictured), and another hike to a spectacular view of the park's own "grand canyon". When scouting for wildlife, Grant would pull over and set up a sighting scope on its tripod, and then, upon spotting wildlife activity, he would set up two more scopes for my son and me - so all three of us could track the activity at the same time. (This is pretty important, as the activity was rarely sedentary, so if we were to see the action each of us needed our own scope - which was steadier and more powerful than binoculars. Very thoughtful!) The Excellent rating is based largely on the expertise Grant brought to the tour, as well as his attention to our personal comfort. The ride (pictured) was roomy, and we all followed the necessary COVID-19 restrictions (masks and a plexiglass barrier between driver and passengers). He provided snacks, water, and a catered box lunch - all first rate. He made sure to take restroom breaks as needed, and filled drive-time by relating discoveries and experiences from his service at the park. Clearly he and his fellow guides love the park and collectively work to keep the ecosystems healthy, while encouraging visitors to really get to know the value of those systems. This was exactly the kind of experience we hope for when bringing our children to a wildlife preserve.

Immerse yourself in the wildness of Yellowstone’s landscape by utilizing the ancient technology of snowshoes. This tour provides an unmatchable backcountry experience of magnificent winter ecology. Though winter can seem like the least likely time to go for a walk in the woods, it is really one of the most rewarding. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem comes alive as wildlife moves from summer to winter ranges. Snow illuminates the landscape in a way you may never have noticed. Wildlife tracks appear frozen in time, and plants and rivers allow for our reflection on resilience and longevity. On this private full-day snowshoe trek, you will explore the environment in an in-depth, hands-on way. Your expert naturalist guide will interpret what you find and what you see, and you may be surprised with the story that arises.
Inclusions: Hotel pickup, Professional naturalist guide, Private safari, Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Souvenir water bottle, Use of spotting scopes and binoculars, Use of snowshoeing equipment
Exclusions: Gratuities, National Park entrance fees. Cost is $20 per person, charged at the gate, subject to change.
Our guide for the day, Will, picked us up at the door of our hotel promptly as scheduled. For the next 9 hours we were treated to the wonders of Yellowstone, history lessons, fabulous lunch and breakfast, snacks and water. Will is so knowledgeable about American history, Yellowstone, animals, geysers, etc., the time flew by. He has such a pleasant personality and gave us the best possible experience. We could never have found all the private places he took us to view the wonders of Yellowstone. If you are considering going to Yellowstone, you MUST go with Yellowstone Safari Company. There are few places on Earth that can boast the diversity of landscape and wildlife like Yellowstone. For adventurous and willing travelers, a walking safari is arguably the best way to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the incredible wildness that is the first National Park. This tour is your opportunity to experience Yellowstone in a way not many ever do. Though in the course of her 150-year history the Park has seen the creation of over 1000 miles of hiking trails, very few people actually embrace the challenge of venturing out onto them. The goal of this safari is to reach beyond the roads and boardwalks and see the beauty of the Rocky Mountains without distraction. We utilize trails to thundering waterfalls, pristine river valleys, rugged mountain peaks, and secret thermal areas out of reach to the unsuspecting tourist. Our guides are extremely well-trained and will offer guests their guidance, knowledge, and care to have the most comfortable outdoor experience possible.

While winter may bring cold temperatures, snowy days and a resounding stillness to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, it is also undoubtedly one of the most exciting seasons to go on a wildlife safari. Yellowstone in winter is an extreme, exclusive place. Of the 300 miles of road in the Park, only 50 miles are open to regular vehicles between the months of November to April. A private, full-day winter tour with Yellowstone Safari Co. focuses on this region, the spectacular Northern Range between Mammoth Hot Springs and Cooke City, Montana, where some of the best wildlife viewing in North American can be found. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is a region steeped in history and wildness, where nature thrives as it did prior to human settlement. On your safari you will have an opportunity to view hundreds, if not thousands, of large mammals and other wildlife, including herds of bison and elk, gray wolves, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and more.
