Alta Ski Area

Alta Ski Area was one of the first ski areas to open in the United States, the 2nd in the Western Ski Region. Ski technique has changed a little, but the passion and the smiles were there from the beginning. Our mountain is world-renowned for its steep and deep powder skiing—averaging 547'' of snow each winter. But did you know that 45% of our terrain is suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers? Our mission is to provide authentic skiing experiences in a natural mountain environment. Bring your family. Bring your friends. Or just bring yourself, and experience a natural mountain environment with a rich history of deep powder. Alta is a skier-only mountain.

I can’t begin to say enough good things about Alta ski resort in Utah. I was determined to visit Alta after so many years, even though my expert skier Europen husband was not so interested. (He really changed his mind—loved it!) My only criticism of the entire visit was that it was difficult to see the skier services building sign from the parking lot, as was the sign for the wildcat lift. We were skiing with mountain collective and needed to get our passes there. However, the minute we climbed up to the skier services building, the staff inside could not have been more helpful or friendly. They were full of smiles and had our mountain collective passes ready almost instantly. They showed my husband the expert runs on the trail map and pointed the way to the easier runs for me. After more friendly smiles and welcomes at the lifts, I was on top, deciding which way to take down the mountain. It was so beautiful, with trees everywhere, not so many skiers on a weekday, that I was halfway down before I realized how wonderfully calm I felt, breathing in the fresh air, and yes! No tightness in my chest, wondering if a snowboarder was going to run into me, cut my turn, or be able to stop. No kkkktttt, screeching turns of a snowboarder close to me and no scraped off, icy snow. Bluebird day with perfect snow quality. This was simply skiing to one’s contentment. I had forgotten how truly amazing that freedom is! When my husband caught up with me later, he expressed the same unbelievable contentment. He also found there were many hidden trails that were fun for an expert skier, even though the resort does not appear to be that large. And the snow “grabbed,” even on steep slopes, he noted. We shopped at the Goldminer’s Daughter Powder House ski shop, finding some wonderful souvenirs, especially the antique Alta ski photos on ceramic coasters for $3. The employees there suggested we try Shallow Shaft for dinner, which we did. (Review to follow.)

Cecret Lake Trail

We had a very pleasant and easy hike to uncover « Cecret Lake » (pronounced Secret). It is an adorable and hidden alpine lake located in Albion Basin near the city of Alta. Our hotel manager and friends from Snow Pine Lodge highly recommended the trail. This area is also part of the Wasatch National Forest. Cecret Lake is also a protected watershed for Salt Lake City. It is not known why the name is spelled with a « C » instead of an « S » but it is believed that it was named by a miner working in the area. The bottom line is that it Is an easy and charming hike that also provided us with the unexpected sight of an Elk or Wapiti that was such a pleasant surprise.

This was the best ski trip ever. The heli operation is top notch, from the guide (Cameron) the pilot, the staff and not to mention the FOOD. We didn't have lunch in the field but back at Base Camp were treated to a 2/3 course meal at the end of the day and complimentary refreshments. If you are reading this review you MUST book a trip, I am booking every year until I cannot walk. More fun than I have ever had on the mountain.
