The ASTROLab is an astronomy activity centre devoted to making science accessible. You'll discover the most fascinating history…that of the Universe, the Earth and life. A wide variety of activities allow you to travel the stars – guided daytime tours of ASTROLab and the Mount Megantic Observatory, astronomy evenings at the ASTROLab, are just a few of the discovery activities available in this fascinating world at the heart of the 1st International Dark Sky Reserve.
We wanted to visit the Megantic astonomic abservatory, the biggest in the eastern coast. We took the night tour (reservation ahead needed, places are restricted!) but traveling to, was a 3 to 4 hours ride, so we looked for camping and chalet options within the park and we found them at Franceville (Inside the park but 30 minutes away from the observatory entry). Nice chalets, well equiped, BBQ, grill, fireplace, stove, fridge, microwave oven, private bathroom, etc. Besides, there are an easy, medium and experimented walking traks in the near by, 4 kmts bike road, a service office a 2 minutes away. It was just great, we had just 2 nights but we would love 4 or 5 but chalets are booked weeks in advance. The website of the parc megantic gives you all the information and how to check for availiability and reservation. The astronomic observatory tour was great, we had such a great night. It's a 2 to 3 hours tour with some planets, the moon and some stars observation. In summary, nice chalet, observatory near-by, grill and fireplace, the megantic valley view...what else you ask for?

Located in an exceptional heritage building with a spectacular view of the St. Lawrence River, it is the region's only astronomy observatory open to the public. Activities are organized by le Centre d'études collégiales en Charlevoix (Cégep), in partnership with the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu and Le Casino de Charlevoix. The observatory hosts an interactive introductory presentation on astronomy with superb photographs, in the multimedia room. When skies are clear, we help you discover the moment's most beautiful celestial objects with your own eyes. Early evening, the observatory also offers observation of the Sun through an adapted telescope. Take this opportunity to treat yourself to an interplanetary trip on a tour of our small-scale model of the solar system, on display at the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu (free admission). A wonderful family experience!

We went with 2 children ages 6 and 8. The Planetarium has helpful descriptions and age ranges for each show. This is important because you will be asked to leave if your child cries during the show. Also, make sure your show is in the language you need. There are shows in French and shows in English. There are many interesting exhibits for children including a piece of meteorite from Mars. There is a nice gift shop but check the exchange rate if you are paying in U.S. currency.
