Beautiful blue sky day in Santiago made better with an informative, casual and delightful tour by experienced guide Viktor. He is apparently a history teacher turned tour guide, and this is a wonderful combination. He's familiar with the history and interesting facts about the city (good and bad), and he has the patient temperament of a group educator. We were a group of 11 adults joined by a love of travel. The pick up was at our hotel by in an air-conditioned bus with courteous driver (sorry forgot his name). We were efficient driving past heavy traffic in the under-river tunnel to visit the Parque Bicentenario which is nicely sculpted large urban park with manicured grasses, water ways, topiary, aviary (flamingos in particular), palms and quiet. From there you can see an inactive volcano in the distance as well as two glaciers on the surrounding mountains. Towards, the city, some of the skyscrapers are apparent. The next stop was up San Cristobal hill to have a commanding view of the downtown and sprawling Santiago. From there, we drove through an upper class neighbourhood and through the areas affected by recent months protests, Viktor noting some of the history and class differences of Chile. We arrived at La Moneda, the presidential palace. We had some time to walk through the associated shopping area (actual administrative grounds were off limits due to the protests). There are some shops, eateries and a local clay art display. Surround the palace are a number of government buildings. Walking a few blocks through the safe and bustling downtown streets packed with professionals, businessman, street hawkers, we arrived at the Plaza de Armas. This large square serves as the centre of the city. We popped into the Metropolitan Cathedral, an ornate Catholic Church before heading to the National Museum. We walked from the Plaza along a lively street full of vendors and shops. I managed to get a mote con huesillo (clear nectar, husked wheat, peach) and a completo (hot dog with avocado), both classic Chilean street foods). We ended with a tour of the Mercado Centrale, which is a large covered central market full of restaurants, seafoods, vegetables and such, all with the sights and smells of a working market. All along the way, Viktor was helpful, courteous, knowledgeable and shepherded us along at a nice pace. I highly recommend contacting him for a tour in and out of Santiago. We will the next time we are in town.
