Top 5 Museums in Hurghada, Red Sea and Sinai

May 10, 2022 Trinity Boughner

Stunning coral reefs and turquoise waters perfect for windsurfing have made Hurghada, on Egypt's Red Sea Coast, a busy resort town. Within easy reach of the stunning Giftun Islands and the Eastern Arabian Desert, Hurghada has seen enormous amounts of development in the past decade—and yes, it does seem overrun with tourists at times. But it’s a relatively easy beach escape for Europeans, and some of the world's best diving and snorkeling sites are just offshore. Walk or catch a cab to explore the old quarter, El Dahar.

Unexpectedly brilliant museum. Really nicely laid out and with some fabulous treasures, including a modest display from the tomb of Tutankhamun, on loan from Cairo. Allow two hours for full appreciation, even if you're not really that into museums. We allowed an hour (keeping our taxi outside), as my travel companion gets bored quickly in museums, and it wasn’t long enough. You can ask for a totally free guide - an Egyptologist - who really is free and won’t even accept a tip at the end. It’s definitely worth it, as it saves you having to read all the information panels, while instead getting spoon-fed history and directed to the highlights. He also really brought exhibits alive, putting them in context with fascinating additional highlights. ‘Exit through the gift shop’ on steroids by the looks of it but we went in the evening and there wasn’t any hard-selling or harassment, and not all shops even open.
