Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the countrys third largest urban area.

Soar over the Southern Alps, take in breathtaking views and walk a trail of High Country history on the Glentanner High Country Heli Hike. This guided tour grants exclusive access to private land on family-owned Glentanner Station, one of New Zealand’s most historic and iconic stations in one of the country’s most magnificent settings. The tour begins with an exhilarating helicopter flight to a high point on Glentanner Station. From the landing spot, the tour continues on foot with a walk down a picturesque farm track. The track descends gradually along alpine tarns and beneath towering peaks. Your guide will ensure plenty of stops for photography and will share stories of the station’s history, geological features, flora and fauna and present-day operations. The walk also includes a break at an historic private hut with a scrummy morning or afternoon tea provided. A reasonable level of mobility is required for the walk but a return flight from the landing site can also be arranged.

This is a popular walk through pines and firs to a lookout with panoramic views to snow-capped mountains. Zig zag path makes the gradient manageable and you can return via a side track (Majuba) to the Forest Amble.

Any stop at Akaroa (as ours was a port stop on the Celebrity Solstice in late December) should be a gateway to a journey to Middle Earth (The Southern Alps), where the Lord of the Rings was filmed. As you approach, it becomes quite apparent how this location was formed by a glacier. The scenery on the ride into this national park is beyond breathtaking (sort of like watching an IMAX 3D movie, but only better). Film Facts: Filming occurred over 11 days during the winter with winds as high as 180 KM per hour. It took the crew 8 months to construct the sets and road leading to this location. All for 21 minutes in the second film. The Middle Earth and its Vistas are SPECTACULAR.
