Top 5 Mines in New York, United States

September 12, 2021 Marianna Hollaway

New York State has it all – booming metropolises, majestic waterfalls, mountains, wine country, chicken wings. Yes, NYC is a magnet for tourists, but an exploration of the rest of the state can be equally thrilling. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is a vision of serene waters, quaint B&Bs, and pretty vineyards. Movie buffs will love Rochester, home of the George Eastman House and one of the world’s most comprehensive film archives. On your way to Niagara Falls, stop in Buffalo to fuel up on spicy wings.

Ace Of Diamonds Mine

First of all, don't pay attention to the YouTube videos of opening a pocket and getting hundreds of Herkimers. Those guys are pros and have "claims" that they spend weeks working on. With that said, Ace of Diamonds is a really great place to look for Herkimers. They have several methods for you to search. The first mentioned above is for pros with weeks of time and knowledge. The second is to find rocks with the tell tale signs and try to smash these. This is hard and you may find a diamond or two over the course of a couple hours (based on my experience). The third is to sluice using their filtered dirt. Its not salted, just the big rocks are already taken out. You should be able to find several nice diamonds after just a few buckets. The fourth way, and for us the far more productive way, is to just look around on the ground. I found 3 busting rocks. My wife and 2 girls found 50 just walking around looking on the ground! The facility itself is more...rustic than the other public mine very nearby. But in my opinion, its way better. The "other" place was fancy and has nice amenities, but the only way to find a diamond that I could tell is by busting the rocks. Ace of Diamonds is a working commercial mine so they bring out fresh dirt and rocks. I don't believe the other place does this. Bathrooms are clean They have picnic tables, but really no shade.

I stay here with my kids during the summer for overnight or weekends and we dig for Herkimer Diamonds. It's very convenient to have the cabins on site, bathrooms, showers, store and mine are very close by. It's very family-friendly if you want to stay or just go up and dig for the day.

Herkimer Diamond Mines

This was my family’s first time here and also going mining. This place was super clean, fun , low cost and extremely fun. My family ( Strycharz family ) spent 6hrs in the super hot sun digging, chiseling and using tools we researched online that were important for of day. We found a huge pocket after hrs of trying to open a hollow sounding section on the main wall. Go to Herkimer Diamond mine website to see our HUGE find. The family stayed up most of the night to clean our daily pocket finds. The owner is great!!! She asked us to come back the next day to show our findings and take pictures to show what is very very possible with the correct tools. The estimated value from the mines manager said we found well over $10,000 worth of gems and crystals. Explained in detail what and why each piece was priced . We did find another 2 5gl buckets filled with Herkimer Diamonds and crystals that we did not have time to clean yet. These were not appraised at the time but was assured we found an incredible amount. Super clear A quality and also lots of AA gems. We are going back next week to enjoy the family time and experience this great time once again. This will now be part of our summer vacations for years to come.

Garnet Mine Tours

Outstanding site for collecting unusually large garnets. Staff is extremely friendly and flexible, and rates are reasonable. Even the locals didn't seem to know about this place, and it offers a fantastic alternative to skiing, which seems to be the predominant attraction in the area.

My birth stone is garnet so I figured it would be fun to go to this mine since I was in the area. I had a *great* time! The owners are very friendly and know loads about garnets, this particular mine, and the history of Adirondack garnet mining. The visitor center/gift shop is full of lovely jewelry and home goods made out of garnet and other stones. When your tour starts, you get driven down to the mine, are given a quick history of Barton mine, and are then shown how to look for garnets (it's really easy.) The (raw) garnets are EVERYWHERE. Right there in the sand, and all around. I collected a 1/4 Ziploc full of stones of various sizes (some were tiny, others were as big as an eraser)--when I weighed it at the visitor center/shop, turned out I owed 27 cents for the whole lot, including taxes. The others on the tour with me were a diverse bunch--some locals, some out-of-towners, and all ages. Everyone loved it. I highly recommend checking this out! Really unusual, a lot of fun, and a great way to learn about geology
