While in Quito we actually went to both Restaurant Maitane locations. The one in the Swisshotel was more upscale in the setting, but we really liked the original location on Avinda Pourtugal. It was a little tricky to find but was smaller and more intemate. We really enjoyed the paella ( one dish would easily do 3-4 people if you had any appetizers first). Also the tapas platter had a really nice selection of items. One of our group of 6 had the Spanish dessert which I don't remember the name, but was a bread soaked in milk that was fantastic .The chef/owner Christian was at both locations when we ate and he came to our table to check on our meal. The service was very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend MaitaneHello Gordon, Thank you for your kind and wonderful review. It was a pleasure to have you in both restaurants and we are really glad you enjoyed our food. The dessert you mention is the Caramelized Torrijas. We hope you visit us again next time you visit Quito.

We had dinner here on our last night in town. We were a party of six and were seated very quickly in the semi outdoor area. I had the penne with meatballs and I could not finish the whole dish because there was so much. The service and ambiance were great and it was nice to meet the owner from Salerno/New York City. It reminded me of a restaurant from my youth on Long Island.

Al Mercato

We lived in Italy for three years, and one of the great things about the culinary scene there was that you could easily find simple, everyday restaurants, with absolutely delicious food. That’s what Al Mercato brings to Ecuador. Seeing it from the outside, the place, located in the lovely piazza of the bustling suburb of Cumbaya, looks almost like a hole in the wall. Inside, the space opens up a bit, with a casual, wood-accented decor. The real star is the food. Simple Italian food, executed to perfection. The lomo fino is one the best cuts of meat in the city. The egg plant parmesan is amazing. The lasagna bolognese superb. The tagliatelle with osso bucco ragú is delicious. And the dark chocolate panna cotta is a great way to finish. If you’re in town, and don’t mind having a great meal, try it.

Went there because I was near by and because of the good evaluation on TripAdvisor and was not disappointed. Spectacular thin crust pizza, large portion so that also adults don’t leave hungry and very attentive service. Didn’t have such good, Italian style pizza in a long time! Go there when you’re in the area or are desperate for good pizza!

My wife and I wound up at this place by chance and the food did not disappoint at all! It was amazing (my wife and I said that it's our new favorite place) We had pasta (me cheese and her bolognesa) both of them were nice, fresh pasta so you can imagine the taste. Our waiter was nice, the girl who passed our bill seemed angry, but just my perspective. Overall this is an A+ place. A little pricey, yet totally worth it.
