I have lived here for several years, but have never tried La Merenda. It was on the top of my todo list. We tried tonight and it was delicious. A few favorites were the Chimichurri and Steak, the Risotto and the Blackberry Old Fashioned. The shrimp dumplings are just too spicy for our table. And for dessert, you cannot go wrong with the Creme Brulee! Great spot to sit outside, around a table and visit with friend-while getting served delicious food!

I came with a friend having just arrived in Milwaukee to do a workshop. My favourite place here, Cemapzuche, closed a couple of years ago and I have been looking for another. This one has a nice neighbourhood feel to it and would be a good place to meet friends for drinks and dinner. The inside dining room is smallish although a number of reviewers said that they never minded a wait. Service ws prompt and friendly. We decided to eat simply. Rather than gorging on vegetable fajitas (I am always on the lookout for vegetarian choices), we settled on two cheese enchiladas and a chile relleno. These are commonplace Mexican-American standards that can often give you a sense of the quality of a place. They were good but not great. The chile relleno didn't have much poblano flavour and was smothered n a sauce that made the batter coating soft and wet. The enchiladas were nice and cheesy but the enchilada sauce was nothing extraordinary. The charm of Cempazuche is that it focused on the regional cuisine of the Yucatan which meant there were several different moles and other things that took you a little deeper into Mexican cuisine. For dessert we had the coco flan which was very good. A nice solid flan set atop delicious chocolate cake that was almost tres leches in texture. That was the winner in this meal. The prices are very moderate which makes it good value and the food overall seems good, but not the sort of thing to seek out when you really want to focus on the art of the food. For an evening with friends it is fine and I would go back for that.
