Maharani

I had Lunch at this Restaurant on a Wednesday.Location:The Restaurant is in Ingolstadt-Friedrichshofen, not far from the Hospital and the Westpark Shopping Mall. It's located in what in America would most likely be defined a Strip Mall along Friedrichshofener Strasse. Easy to find, and even if you don't find parking right in front, there are enough spaces around.Premise:Every now and then I like going out for Indian Food, or ordering it for delivery.I have to say I've had good to excellent experiences around the World: in Italy, Greece, Portugal, Dubai, the US and the UK.Sadly, even though Germany has a sizeable population of People of South Asian Origin, the Indian Restaurants I've tried have been acceptable to average at best.I've ordered from various Indian Restaurants that deliver in Ingolstadt, and while all are eatable, none has really wowed me. The Maharani Restaurant does not deliver as far as I know.I also have some dishes that are my top choices when visiting an Indian Restaurant for the first time. These are Butter Chicken, a Vindaloo (meat may vary according to availability or another big favorite of mine Rogan Josh. There are of course other dishes I enjoy and which I would look for if there is a return visit. My Experience:I arrived at Lunchtime on a Wednesday, curious also by the positive reviews and to compare it to my other experiences in Ingolstadt. The interior is not particularly exciting, but it is clean and seemed well organized. The Restaurant was maybe 1/3 full at the time I came.I arrived looked around, and was gestured to a table and received the menu card. Though having looked both online and in front of the Restaurant, I already knew what I wanted to order.Rogan Josh was one of the Specials of the Day on Wednesday, and I really was looking forward to that. The waiters barely glanced at me, even while I ordered the Rogan Josh and a Spezi. I was asked wether I would like a salad or soup, which is included at Lunch. I chose the salad, which came promptly, along with my drink. The salad was a typical small side salad of greens, tomatoes, cucumber in a yoghurt dressing. I finished the small plate before my main dish arrived, and it was ok.Then my main dish arrived and was accompanied by a large serving of Basmati Rice and Naan Bread. I was positively surprised by this, as often you only get one or the other. The problem was the main dish, it just didn't seem right, why were there chickpeas in the sauce??? And why does the color look different from what I'm used to?Anyways, I was hungry and who am I to argue? Especially when there is no one to argue with. Again the Wait Staff barely acknowledged my existence, never really glancing my way.I ate what was given me, and I must say it was quite tasty, a relatively mild curry, and the mutton was very tender. Still I was quite certain that this was not what I had ordered.Once I was finished my plates got cleared and I considered saying something, but was afraid that all they would say is that this is how they make it here. Besides no one ever even asked me wether I had enjoyed my meal or not. So I just asked for the check.I ended up paying €10.20 and I rounded up to either €11 or €12, since I just can't bring myself to not leave a little something.Once outside I again looked at the Menu Card they have on display, and there it was:the other Mutton Special of the Day was Chana Gosht, or Meat with Chickpeas. The price for the two dishes was the same, so I didn't get stiffed or anything, but it was upsetting to have gotten something that I didn't actually order (though again it was well prepared).I'm not sure if I'll give this place another go. Often I like to go to a place 3 times before giving it a final judgement (when possible), but the indifferent Service combined with getting the wrong Dish is a tough one.

We arrived for an early dinner and had our choice of outdoor seating. The waiter was very attentive, presenting menus and taking our drink orders immediately. We each had a mixed salad, mine with house dressing and my wife’s with oil and vinegar. The house dressing tasted like a light yoghurt-based Vinaigrette; very good. For entrees we ordered Hariali malai kebab and Achari chicken tikka. Both were excellent with the rice served separately so we could combine as we saw fit. The dishes we chose were spicy but not spicy hot. The flavorings of the Aschari were bold while the Hariali was more subtle. We both agreed the Aschari was the better of the two. Of course, that’s just personal preference. For the quality and quantity of food, I judge Gandi to be a very good value.

Delicious food, generous portions and reasonable prices. Lots of choices of meat and vegetarian dishes. The naans are also very tasty. The room is well decorated and the waiters are very nice. We had a great evening.

We arrived without a reservation and the staff got us a table from outside. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was superb as we are Brits and eat Indian food in the UK quite often. The service was exemplary and very friendly - would recommend 100%.
