Set in the pristine Southern Karoo against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, Aquila Private Game Reserve offers an exciting taste of real Africa, just two hours’ from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5 - offering safari’s in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback. Dining takes place buffet style, where the chef presents a rich variety of authentic South African cuisine, together with a superb South African wine list. After dinner, gather around the telescope and be taken on a journey of the southern skies. 4-star accommodation is offered in Afro-chic lodge rooms or rock, thatch and wood cottages with alfresco showers. All accommodation has air-conditioning. Aquila welcomes children, providing activities to keep them entertained in the children’s play area. A visit to Aquila would also not be complete without a tour of the Eco Synergy systems: an award-winning project developed to reduce Aquila’s carbon footprint.
Overall was a nice experience going on the Safari Drives. We did the overnight Safari and paid for the included transport. We arrived at 11 am, and had lunch at 12, but we couldn't check into our room until 2pm, so keep that in mind when purchasing the added travel. With all of this downtime, there wasn't much to do except sit on the lawn chairs and wait for our rooms. The only activities they have to fill this downtime is the Spa (which was very overpriced in my opinion, 30 min massage for R590) and the bar (which was also very expensive. We paid R205 for a bottle of wine that retails at R75) So be prepared to spend a lot of extra money if you want to stay entertained during all of this down time. The Safari drives were wonderful! We saw almost all of the big 5, except Leopards, so I highly recommend the Safari drives. We loved our tour guides, they had a lot of experience and were very entertaining as well. Checkout on the final day was between 10-10:30 am and our transport didn't leave until 12:30. So once again, we had a ton of downtime and nothing to do. During the summer season, you can enjoy the outdoor pool but as it was winter, it was too cold to swim outside. Also, the heated pool that was advertised is not free. It costs R220 per person as it is a part of the Spa.

Nuwedam Guest Farm Touwsrivier is a little farm nestled at the foot of a small mountain in the beautiful Karoo. It offers spacious self-catering accommodations and tranquility for travelers. The guest farm provides accommodation in 2 comfortable furnished self-catering units. Both units comprise its own private bathroom, kitchenette, and braai area.
Stay was a pleasant surprise, very neat and accommodating, also see it in the light that it was a late booking and the Guest Farm was very accommodating. Keep up the good work. Will definitely use it again and will recommend it to family and friends

What a GEM.... not far from civilization yet far away enough to hear the silence and enjoy the majestic star constellations at night. The best part is the neat and well maintained chalets - all in a nutshell for a well deserved rest at the end of a long day. I'll be back...

Extremely nice location within a mountain nature reserve; Wished we could have stayed longer to explore the flora and fauna; Farm road however may be difficult for a small sedan car; The accommodation is basic but still very enjoyable - Thanks to our host Hilarie

Bookings for Aquila are handled by competent staff based in Sea Point and ours was no exception: friendly and prompt service with all the right answers to our innumerable questions. The welcome at the lodge itself also spot-on and the staff erudite and so very ready to please. Can’t fault the food either, although the inability to even be allowed to help myself to a pat of butter did seem a tad OTT. Still, I’d rather they concerned themselves about my welfare than allow the virus to take root. We had standard rooms – not much to write about there – with beverage tray, hair drier etc. on hand. But the main attraction is, of course, the mammals and birds and so it was that we set out on our first game drive accompanied by a driver and so-called guide. And that’s where it all fell apart. One solitary jumbo? And we all know what sociable creatures they are. Then there’s the giraffe, awkwardly trying to bend down to graze ‘karoo bossies’ instead of proudly lifting its head to twist off the succulent leaves of an acacia tree. Hippo and buffalo aplenty, but all supplement-fed in one form or another. And as for the 4 mangey lions that were purportedly rescued from being canned targets … I wonder if they wouldn’t have been better off. No, game park it is not; rather, the animals have been brought in merely as a magnet to attract the tourists with little regard (my observation) for their health and welfare as such. On the other hand, the birdlife was excellent and gave rise to sightings of the endemic lark species as well as a heronry so all was not lost. Did I enjoy my stay? Yes, travelled with 4 very good friends and we had many laughs. Would I go again? No. Would I recommend? Sadly, again I have to say no.
