Thornbury Castle is a beautiful 16th century building, which was once owned by Henry VIII and stands in 15 acres of regal splendour, surrounded by Tudor Walled Gardens. It nestles on the northern edge of Thornbury adjacent to the Gloucestershire countryside, 12 miles north of Bristol, and is well placed for visiting the Cotswolds, the Georgian city of Bath, Bristol and Wales. Following a multi-million pound refurbishment programme, guests will experience a luxurious and sophisticated castle hotel stay, with reference to the history and traditions of Thornbury’s most famous owner; King Henry VIII. Thornbury Castle has 26 carefully-restored bedchambers, all named after key figures from Tudor history. Many with sumptuous four-poster beds and splendid stone-carved fireplaces, making your stay just that little bit more special. The "Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite" boasts the largest bed in a hotel in the UK - 10 feet wide. The restaurant at Thornbury Castle offers plenty of modern, British inspired dishes, as well as some traditional favourites. All dishes on the dinner menu use only the finest and freshest ingredients, many grown in the castle's kitchen garden and herb garden. Afternoon Teas taken in splendid surroundings at Thornbury Castle are the ultimate treat for all guests. The recipient of many prestigious awards for its fine food, Thornbury Castle has three dining rooms, each baronial in style, with stunning chandeliers, panelled walls, heraldic shields and open fires.
We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Thornbury Castle and I have to say our expectations were exceeded. The castle has been through a comprehensive (and sympathetic) restoration over the past two years. We found staff to be professional and welcoming. As we were staying for four nights on a DBB basis we were offered a personalised menu on our third and forth night - this is unusual and refreshing for the hotel to offer. Overall we found the food to be delicious and in particular the homemade sourdough bread was top notch. We look forward to returning soon.

Lovely golf course and lovely staff in the golf centre - but my room in the lodge was definitely not up to par! It would appear that the accommodation is not a priority. This is supported by the fact that reception is a short walk away in the golf centre and door entry to the accommodation is by entry code. I stayed in a twin bed room on the ground floor, booked and paid for as double occupancy but in the event my other half was unable to travel so the room was paid for on the basis of double occupancy but only used by one person. The en suite room had the bare essentials ie twin beds with lovely crisp sheets (but otherwise not a terribly comfortable mattress); a dressing table with mirror, and a tv - but not a working telephone (thank heavens for mobile phones) or an easy chair, the absence of which means that you sit on the bed or the dining room style chair at the dressing table. There were no bedside lights or wall lights - only one ceiling light which, annoyingly, could only be switched on and off from the door. The choice is is to leave it on all night (torture) or stub the toes in the dark on the way back from turning the light off. There was also a wardrobe with safe, iron and ironing board -but a previous occupant had punched a hole in the side some time previously and this hadn’t been repaired. Additionally, I had a dodgy kettle which didn’t always work - not very useful for the morning cuppa! At least the room was on the ground floor so no problem with dragging a case up the stairs, and unlike some in my party I was not disturbed in the early hours by carousing of other guests. Having mentioned all this on checkout and was told my comments would be passed to the lodge manager (not seen over my two night stay) so I am hoping that this was indeed the case. They also still practice covid safeguards so the room is not serviced during your stay and if you need extra tea and coffee, or amenities this must be requested in the golf centre. On the plus side, it’s a beautiful location and reasonably convenient for the town; the breakfast (not included in the price ) was excellent, and the staff friendly. What a shame they are let down by the accommodation.

We have three rooms all, two shower rooms and a bathroom with shower all tastefully decorated to compliment the traditional feel of a grade 1 and 2 listed building. The rooms all have Freeview colour televisions, a hospitality tray as well as free Wi-Fi. The rooms all face on to a charming bustling high street. Breakfast is served from 7.30 am for those who need it early
First time ever eating out in Christmas Day and very impressed. The 3 course Christmas Dinner was lovely, the staff were all friendly, attentive and the service second to none. I'd highly recommend this pub, food and staff for any occasion.
