'where the wind blows stronger and the climb gets harder .... At 1272 meters above sea level, after a long period of restoration, the Hermitage was returned to the faithful who will conduct a hearing pilgrimage to July 2 to September 12, with a higher turnout in the Sunday following the 15th of August, the feast of S. Falcon. When Pietro Angeleri came in 1235 at Palena was a little over twenty years. Left his place of birth, Sant 'Angelo Limosano, was directed towards Roma but his journey was interrupted by a terrible blizzard that forced him to pass the' winter in a mountain hut at Scone. In spring desisted from his purpose of going to Rome and headed for the Majella, at the foot of Mount Palleno. Here Peter - Pope Celestine V - "reached the Majella, stops in a cave and began life as a hermit real. Early signs of temptation and the first signs of heaven.'s Afraid of the dark and the company of Angels. People notice the extraordinary nature of that presence and starts to search for Brother Peter ... It was precisely those of Palena and the district to beg and convince him to become a priest. "So wrote Father Quirino Solomon in "Celestino people" on p. 5 Back from Palena in 1238. Some stories make certain the construction of the complex by Celestine around the fourteenth century to hand down to posterity the memory of the first residence hermit of their founder. L 'hermitage remained in their possession until the dissolution of the order, which took place in 1807, following the Napoleonic edict which provided for the reorganization of the orders hermit. The goods were endorsed by Ferdinand II, King of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which is claimed to have donated the hermitage to the noble family Perticone, who made it his summer residence. On many occasions the barons allowed the pilgrims spend the night, especially on the feast of Our Lady, when companies from neighboring areas flocked July 2 to praise Madonna singing "Maria ... Maria hooray hooray! The deep silence of the forest will repeat forever the 'eco'. In 1970 the sanctuary was an act high and noble donated to the town of Palena so that its historical values and mysticism could be from now on and forever heritage. The only condition is made by the town of Palena sign was that the purpose and the spirit of the age-old sanctuary, a place of worship for all believers, it was always preserved. As a pledge and commitment to the donation from 'high historical and cultural content, the Mayor did Cifani explanatory plaque, which is all' now can see on one of the exterior facades of 'hermitage. Emerged unscathed from the two world wars and the 'Nazi-Fascist occupation, in 1984, was badly hit by an earthquake that caused the collapse of the roof. Thanks to national funds set aside for restructuring the hermitage is back to shine. The property is now managed by the Consortium of Celestinian and is open to the public for guided tours and overnight stays. The housing complex houses inside 30 beds, including single, double and quadruple rooms, a dining room and a kitchen with modern equipment. E 'possible to stay within the facility throughout the year with at least a 48 hour notice. It also offers the possibility to use the kitchen.
