The Ennerdale Country House Hotel is a Grade 2 listed building nestled within 5 acres of tranquil landscaped gardens and Italian fountains and figurines. As you walk through our large beautifully refurbished hallways you will pass by painstakingly restored original fireplaces and ceilings and you will start to realise that this is only the beginning of an experience you will never forget.
I stayed for one night whilst exploring Ennerdale and the West Coast at St Bee's. The 'hotel' is in the perfect location between the two. It's close to a large CoOp (5m drive), and petrol station so handy to top up on supplies if walking. The exterior is quite grand looking and the grounds were really nice to walk around and sit with the dog after a hard hike. Staff at reception was warm and welcoming. I did not eat here so can not comment on the food, only to say the dining area looking out on the grounds looked lovely. I'd been camping for a few days so any bed would have been sufficient! My single room was small and basic but fine. It was clean. Areas to improve/comment on; The window made a noise in the draft so I had to pack it with tissues to stop it rattling. The shower lacked umph and I had to run it for 3 mins to get close to warm. It was hot in time though! There was mould in the corner ceiling/wall. View was of car park and dirty roof ladder. The one thing which will stop me booking again is the noise of the water system when someone uses the hot tap (I think it's the heater or pump?). It is so loud it woke me up three times in the night. Not just woke up but shocked, unpleasant waking up! Not a nice thing. Unfortunately when I left I wasn't asked if I had had a good stay. Location and character great but like many other reviews on here - it needs an injection of cash.

Hotel
This place is a biggish pub with a few rooms. Close to the A595 the rooms at the front suffer from traffic noise but are otherwise well appointed with decent showers and beds. We had an evening meal which was average at best, and the drinks were expensive. Breakfast was fairly ordinary and the packed lunch pretty poor.

Away from it all at the end of single track road, Ghyll Farm is in the heart of Ennerdale. It has comfortable, high standard accommodation in one of the most peaceful valleys in the English Lake district with spectacular views of the Ennerdale fells and valley and easy access to the walking routes. The unspoilt coast and beaches are within easy reach. The B & B is recently refurbished and finished to a high specification. Upon opening we were awarded a 4 star rating from the AA. We have two superking/twin bedrooms and one three bed family room, all rooms are ensuite with a walk in shower. Heating and hot water are all supplied from environmentally friendly Biomass boiler and solar panels. Your breakfast will be freshly prepared and cooked to order using local produce (when available). There is an outdoor individual seating area and guests are welcome to walk areound the garden, meadow and wildlife pond. Benches are provided for you to sit and take in the spectacular views.
Simply wonderful! The accommodation was immaculate and extremely comfortable. The views of the surrounding landscape were stunning. The hosts, Chris and Roger, were beyond welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend.

Good for cycling (bikes can be delivered for hire), kayaking (bring your own) & fishing (National and local licences required. One fly fishing rod available to hire.
We were already impressed by the beauty of the Lake District. We usually go somewhere without booking in advance and this is also how we found the Beckfoot retreat. We were so lucky. The location is perfect: quiet, next to the lake, peaceful sheep as neighbours. It instantly felt good. Nina is the most lovely host imaginable and we stayed there for four days, end of July. Since then, the Beckfoot retreat regularly pops into our heads and that called for this review. Thanks Nina & the bunch :)
