Black American West Museum

A museum that explores the history of black cowboys, wranglers and ranchers in the American West.

The historic artifacts are mostly things you'd see in other museums of the West, though they do add to the story of the Black Americans who lived with them. For me, the best part of this interesting little museum was the rows of photos that line the walls. Be sure to read the captions; they'll give you a much better idea of the peoples' lives and achievements.

Center for Colorado Women's History

The Center for Colorado Women’s History focuses on scholarship, research, lectures, tours and exhibits that expand the understanding and collective memory of the history of women in Colorado. Most importantly, the Center is connecting local stories to the broader stories of women’s history worldwide. The historic house has been the home to inspiring women since 1883. It has been beautifully restored to the era of 1912-1924 and is furnished with the family's original belongings. Guided house tours weave together the stories of the many women, such as Anne Evans, who lived and worked in the home and the impact of the families on early Denver.

I loved the Byers-Evans House tour! Our tour docent, Margaret, did a fabulous job of explaining the history of the Byers/Evans families and how they influenced the development of Denver. I'm a bit of a historic house nerd and have visited many old mansions and am often disappointed by the inability of tour docents to answer my difficult questions. Margaret was a wonderfully knowledgeable guide and could speak with authority about everything we asked! Bravo! Great tour!

You can spend hours here. I only saw three of the exhibitions but they were all terrific. Interesting and well told. Destination Colorado about Keona that turned in to a ghost town. An interesting tale about how life was for the settlers. It was aimed at both kids and grown ups. Denver A-Z is reallatively quick to see and really just some fun facts about Denver. Written on the land – takes you through the history of the Ute Indians. The interesting history is also filled with movies and interviews. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to see the other exhibitions. Included in the is also a ticket to the Center for Colorados Women History. So you get a lot for the $14 entrance fee.
