The world-famous Maritime Museum in Belem has a children’s section as well as ship models. Portugal was a world leader in maritime exploration (Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, etc.)
Housed in part of the Monastery of Geronimo, this museum is really very much worth a visit. It gives a graphic depiction of the great marine history of Portugal and ends with a wonderful display of royal barges, which must be one of the largest in the world. Really epic.

A fabulous assemblage of exquisite gold objects were thrilling to gaze upon. Bracelets, necklaces and torques, finely crafted and beautifully ornate, were amongst the highlights. With an inspired setting in the incomparable Monastery, our tour gave us a captivating account of life and culture from the earliest mysterious times. The exhibits on the dawn of writing were fascinating, with scripts that heralded the beginnings of records and probably officialdom. Egyptian artifacts were marvellous, mummies, figurines and a gorgeous sculpture of a woman's head. Life under the Romans is well presented. Lusitania, as the territories were called by the Romans, has yielded wonderful riches. Mosaics showing Theseus and the Minotaur, Apollo and Daphne and a Bacchanalian scene are remarkable in their vibrancy and colourful images.
