Restaurante AL Margen

We were totally blown away by the excellence of this little restaurant. Its simplicity in decor adds to the charm and gives no clue as to the magic which we were subsequently served. We'd heard about "the broccoli" and tried it.... fantastic. Every dish was innovative and beautifully presented. No way was this a meal of style over substance - it was total style and unbeatable substance.Thank you again for an unforgettable meal.

Nura Bilbao

We recently ate at Nura. Our 3 course lunch, including 2 carafes of house wine, cost 40 Euros. The food was excellent. Surprisingly, we were the only diners. While the address is not in Bilbao's old town, it is only a short walk away, over the river. The area is a little down-at-heel, but we felt perfectly safe walking there and back.

BASCOOK

Located in an old salt warehouse, it offers a dimly lit and relaxed atmosphere that compliments their soul-filled elaborations. Led by chef Aitor Elizegi, his basque, yet international cuisine, green and local, is a reflection of his daily hard work. Base

One of the more interesting places to eat in Bilbao, good food, good wines, excellent service. We had lunch here and the choices were interesting, tasty and beautifully prepared. We had wine by the glass (really good amounts of wine and good wine). Great quality for the price you pay

Porrue

It was our first night in Bilbao and we had no dinner bookings. So we checked with the hotel. The front desk recommended Porrue strongly. Although the reviews were a bit mixed, we decided to try Porrue since it is virtually next to the hotel. The restaurant website also looked good.Sadly, It was the only regrettable meal we had in Basque Country.Porrue was quite quiet when we arrived around 730 pm and there was probably one service staff. He was quite helpful. Our first starter of anchovies tasted like it came out of a can and it took a long time to be served. We had great anchovies in the tapas bar in San Sebastián and we thought we can’t go wrong. Porrue’s anchovies were very salty and the service staff explained that it was a different variety from what we ate at San Sebastián. Next was the risotto which was just too salty to be edible and we sent it back to the kitchen. It was replaced promptly. The biggest let down was the main course. We had to send back the ox steak as it was rare for us. It came back a few minutes. The meat tasted like it was simply slapped on a grill - without any seasoning. It was also cold. They served the main dish with limp fries and a bowl of green lettuce that looked like remnants of the day’s vegetables. We hardly ate them. By then, we lost our appetite, nibbled on a few slices of the meat, paid the bill (which was over-priced considering what we ate) and left.Thankfully, after Porrue, we had great meals with good value at the Neura, restaurant at Hotel Marques de Riscal and the Markina restaurant. Given the consistent track record of good food in Basque Country since we arrived almost a week ago, I wonder if it was simply a poor kitchen day at Porrue. With Basque country’s culture of excellent cuisine and fresh ingredients, I think Porrue can be better by focusing more on the food and less on presentation. Ps: After I gave my feedback to the hotel of our Porrue dining experience, they apologised and dropped us a note with a small box of chocolates. Nice touch.

I walked in accidentally because was looking for some food near the Guggenheim's on Annunciation day and lot of places were closed.I was readily met by the very friendly waitress who started speaking in English with me and was very professional overall. In the end she even refilled my bottle with the drinking water. I'm very thankful. As for the food - I forgot what was the name of the dish, but it was very tasty, very good quality meat with a cheese sauce. Went very well with a red wine.Would definitely recommend.
