Often rated Best Italian restaurant in the State of Hawaii, and consistently voted Best Italian in Maui, Casanova is a staple of the lifestyle of Upcountry Maui since 1986. From early morning breakfast thru lunch and dinner and to late night clubbing and
We had eaten at Casanova Bistro in Kahului shortly after landing and picking up our rental car. We were so pleased with our experience there that we were eagerly anticipating our dinner reservation at Casanovaâs Makawao restaurant which was named the best Italian restaurant in all of Hawaii in 2016! I ordered the gnocchi strozzapreti which consisted of 7 large ricotta and spinach dumplings served with both a homemade tomato sauce and a creamy gorgonzola cheese sauce ($14.00). It was so good that I wished for more! My wife chose the tonne fresco, a filet of fresh Ahi tuna, seared and served with tomatoes, olives and capers over arugula ($34.00). Tips: (1) Make a reservation and ask to be seated at one of the tables along the panoramic windows overlooking a lush garden (pictured here) at the rear of the dining room. (2) You can get a carafe (about ½ bottle) of wine during happy hour (5:00-6:00pm) for just $5.00.Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in such details. This protected courtyard is a lovely place to sit and enjoy shade or sun in subtropical quiet. No noisy music, no espresso-machine roar, no oblivious online addicts glued to their seats for hours. If it rains, which often happens in Makawao, you can move inside, where it is, alas, considerably noisier. If your companions are boring you to death, you can shop for glass, bling or art in the surrounding shops. Service can be a little, well, quirky but staff seem like a friendly and well bonded group. My friend chose a mushroom-and-goat-cheese omelette, substituting greens for the potatoes, and gave the dish a C+. Her friend had a spinach omelette but left those yummy home-fried potatoes on the plate--I had to hold my wrist down to refrain from stabbing them over to my plate. None of my potatoes survived my breakfast, you may be sure! As for me, my salmon benny was as good as it could be, right down to details like medium-cooked eggs that don't run all over the plate in their efforts to escape my fork. Each of my friends opted to pay $2.50 extra for the privilege of local eggs, but I, a Canadian armed with 70-cent dollars, did not wish to bump my estate into bankruptcy for breakfast and stayed with free-range chickens pecking their way around the Mainland. As it was, two single capps and the benny set me back $24 (about $33 CAD). The initial tip was normal but I didn't tip at the end because apparently the waithelp have not learned the fine art of NOT INTERRUPTING PEOPLE MID-SENTENCE. How rude! Why not simply get out the bullhorn every so often and yell, "Table 3--aren't you finished yet? Move on; get a life!"

Although a " variety" store, I would consider it more a grocery/convenience store. Since this location is far from a grocery store or Walmart, it fills the need in this upcountry location. Besides groceries, there is feed for animals and things like cards and Hawaiian lotions. Worth stopping in if you are having lunch across the street at Kula Bistro.
