Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

Composed by about 30 musicians aged between 13 and 46 years old, the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra was founded in 1913, being recognized as the oldest and youngest Mandolin Orchestra in Europe, due to the age of its foundation and the ages of its performers. A distinction of relevance in a region of excellence within the European community. Annually, the Orchestra performs about forty concerts, with a classical music programs adapted to the mandolin of the great and renowned classical composers such as Mozart, Strauss, Vivaldi, Ketèlbey, Monti, Waldteufel, among others. The artistic season is organized by Weekly Concerts and Special Concerts, which have been developed over the past 25 years. In this period of time, the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra had performed on about 500 concerts, both locally and internationally.
Third time in Madeira and second time hearing this amazing group of musicians under their talented your conductor. A fantastic performance tonight by every single member of the orchestra. The range of dynamics and musical effects that the orchestra produce are simply amazing. Very clever arrangements too that highlight every section of the orchestra. Lovely introduction in Portuguese and English from one of the front of house team which felt much more professional than the Northern English ‘comic’ guy that compared last time.

We’ve been to several concerts here and have loved every one. The standard of the musicians and singers is outstanding. The acoustics in the church are superb and the size of the venue makes for a personal experience. Some of the concerts we’ve attended were “Songs from Musicals”, “Beatles Music”, “Classical Favourites” and “Classic Rock”. We’ll be back next year.

Madeira Classical Orchestra-Initially known as Madeira Camera Orchestra, the Madeira Classical Orchestra, founded on the 13th of February 1964 by Jorge Moreira Carneiro, is one of the oldest in Portugal. After performing for more than five decades, the Orchestra includes a bold artistic project, offering, at this moment, a flourishing season of classical, romantic and contemporaneous programmes.
Saw the orchestra play, lead by the top French Horn player in the world, they were enchanting, mesmerizing & sounded awesome. The venue has great atmosphere as it’s enclosed with boxes off the stalls area, plus it’s ornate & has grandeur. Definitely try this experience you won’t be disappointment.

We went on the theatre tour and it was so interesting. We went on the stage, behind the stage, under the stage and above the stage in the flies. We also saw the dressing rooms and went onto the roof terrace. The tour lasted just over an hour and we had an excellent guide who explained the history of the theatre. We made enquiries at the box office to find out when it was as it is just once a week. You need to be able to climb a lot of wooden steps so it is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems or for small children.
