Hung Wang

If you fancy a free Birthday Party Dinner at probably the best Chinese restaurant in Lincolnshire, you can have one! Just telephone the Hung Wang in Gainsborough and book for two or more guests. When you’re on the A631, there is a temptation to bypass the town, but turn into it and you will have a very pleasant surprise like I did. I had intended to take some friends out to a very large Chinese restaurant in Bawtry, but seeing the high menu prices there, I decided against. I found the Hung Wang more by accident than design on the Internet. But the few reviews were mainly about the takeaway, which has a good reputation-not the restaurant. It is down the main Trinity Street into the town by the traffic lights-but you wouldn’t know it. I became aware of its name in very bright lights over a Chinese takeaway. I asked in there where the restaurant was and was directed to next door, which was looking dark and uninviting, with draped curtains at the window. Apparently this restaurant has been open for two years. In my view they are underselling themselves and the whole of the signage (perhaps with a new name?) and outside decor needs completely reviewing to give it some impact. Otherwise the separate takeaway just causes confusion and dominates the street scene. People don’t see a restaurant there! This is a shame , because this restaurant made me gasp with pleasure. And it had such good food!It is fifteen minutes’ drive from Retford and Bawtry, just over the borders of Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire-extremely convenient. Most people don’t go to Gainsborough for an evening out, but they are missing a treasure in the Hung Wang Restaurant if they don’t try itWhen we walked in, I was astonished. There were two dining areas, one behind the other, stretching back for a considerable distance. We loved the first impression of welcoming light, and the freshness of the beautifully laid out tables. We were greeted at the door by Wendy (she had a Chinese name) who had a lovely smile and a very pleasant manner. Above us there were chandeliers, red hanging lanterns with tassels and a sweeping hidden red light in the ceiling that guided the eye past the small mini -tiled bar into the main restaurant. I was disappointed that there was no seating area just inside the front door , where people could wait on settees and have a drink. The space had been taken up by tables that were of solid dark hardwood like the chairs. While it is busier at weekends, this restaurant is not full and on the night we were there were only two other tables occupied. It was obvious that a lot of money had been spent on the decor, with beautiful Chinese pottery and relief wall panels. The Chinese items had been imported and gave the place a very authentic feel. I was impressed by the hand carved archway overhead and the intricate detail on the wooden swing doors into the impeccably clean toilet area .Cream walls also had large Chinese Good Luck hanging decorations. A patterned thick blue carpet covered the floor.Wendy brought us the menus, the like of which would have graced a West End restaurant. They were gold and solid with excellent print readability in good light from overhead spotlights .The range of different dishes was impressive. As well as some English steaks, there were 20 seafood dishes, 11 chicken dishes and as many pork, lamb and beef dishes. English beer was available if you did not want to try one of 12 wines or champagne. We sat at good sized tables with two silk tablecloths, one red and one yellow. Looking across the restaurant this made everything bright and cheerful. When we made our food choice, Wendy was very flexible. We were able to look at the 5 course set meals and make some alterations . We began with a shared plate of Chinese starters, beautifully set out with paper flowers. Without prompting, she brought us a finger bowl. She was enthusiastic and attentive throughout the meal, pouring our drinks. All of the large plates were warm. Every piece of white china had a rose motif on it . She shredded a large duck leg for us and we had a bamboo casket of pancakes to make wraps with cucumber and onion slithers, dipped in a delicious sauce . The meat was so tender and moist. Our tasty spicy beef came sizzling on an iron griddle and our sweet-and-sour chicken and prawn dishes were also attractively presented. I was the only one who had a sweet-a pineapple fritter. I did not like the commercialised bought- in sweets available. For me this was a disappointment. The standard of cooking was first class, so I wondered why they could not at least make some home-made desserts. We were amazed at the amount of food we had. We were so full at the end of the meal. In fact we had to have some of it put in containers and my wife and I took it home to eat next day. Because everything had been freshly cooked it did not lose its tastiness. We finished our meal with chocolates and coffee, well satisfied with the service and the quality food. There is no doubt that we will visit this restaurant again. It is by far the best Chinese restaurant in comfortable surroundings to be found in this area.Open every day ,except Mondays, including Bank Holidays, it opens at 5:30 PM and closes at 10:30 PM or 11:30 PM on Friday and Saturday PM. Good chinese food a bit expensive on certain dishes, clean and tidy place . You can order over the phone, pick up in person or they can deliver. Delivery can take some time as it's quicker picking it up yourself
