My boyfriend and I had a fantastic time visiting Calakmul. Kary was super helpful getting everything organized for us. The walk through the rainforest to enjoy the flora and fauna was a fantastic way to start the tour. We enjoyed bird spotting, howler monkeys, and a bizarre stinging caterpillar that looked like a spikey branch which attached to my pants. The ruins deep in the jungle were my favorite that I’ve ever been to. Very remote, no crowds of people, and absolutely stunning pyramids towering over the canopy. Our guide Ezekiel provided great information and was able to answer our many, many questions about Mayan culture both past and present. The campground was in a pretty spot near a seasonal lake, luckily full after a season of heavy rain. The long road to the campground was bumpy but passable. No hot water available for showers, but air mattresses, sleeping bags, and tents were nice and covered by a palapa which kept everything dry.

Small place where you can see 2-3 million bats. First a couple of bats come out to explore the area. We saw a hawk catching a bat. Then, arround 7:30 the rest of the bats came out like a tornado. Some fly right above your head, amazing! Really recommend to see this spectacle yourself.

If you're in the area to visit Calakmul, there really is no excuse not to visit Xpujil as well. This site is located on the west end of town and was an easy walk from our hotel. Not too many Mayan sites are so easily accessible. Though small, (we took our time and probably spent around 30 minutes there) it's worth visiting to see some well preserved structures in a jungle setting. You won't see too many visitors here as Calakmul is the big draw in the area. We visited in the morning just as we were getting ready to head out of town and had the site to ourselves with the exception of one other couple.
