At some point our ancestors who lived in the area in the period 4350 to 2700 BC (more than 8000 years ago) started to bury their dead in chambers made of large boulders, smaller stones and clay. They covered them with sand and as a result they appeared as small hills in the country side. D45 shows what is left of one of these once formidable structures. 18.5m in length and 4.5m wide on elevated terrain in the forrest. Impressive if you realize the people who made this structure had only very primitive means at their disposal. D45 is 800m from Emmen railway station.
