Since the beginning of my exporting career I have long dreamt of having my own small "bodega", where I could make a few bottles of wine of the best quality possible. Briones, in the heart of the Rioja Alta, gathered all the conditions I was looking for: old steep vineyards of Tempranillo grapes, chalky soil and a climate showing a marked Atlantic influence. Declared a town of historic and artistic merit, Briones is where we decided to site our bodega. Twenty years ago, we restored an old 19th Century house on the outskirts of the town. On the adjoining land we built facilities for vinification, barrel and bottle ageing and planted a small experimental vineyard. Now, as one of the smallest and youngest wineries in Spain —our first vintage was 1994— our wines are among the most prestigious in the country, and we are exporting them to over 30 markets. This encourages us to grow, not in quantity, but to constantly improve our style; how to get the best from each grape and each barrel. To continue to enjoy our wine-making. -Miguel Merino
We visited the Miguel Merino Winery with the Unusual Suspects tour from Rioja Wine Trips last week. We loved our visit with Erika! She was knowledgeable and charming and led us through an intimate wine tasting in their beautiful building. In addition to their outstanding wines, they are also a winery that upholds strict quality standards and impeccable customer service. They truly care about the people they make their wines for. We had bought some bottles of their wine to take home with us and in packing a few days later, we discovered that a few bottles of their La Loma (excellent by the way) had leaked slightly from the cork. We let them know and Miguel and Inma (from Rioja Wine Trips) were eager to make things right. They immediately sent replacement bottles to our hotel in Barcelona. Honestly, there are many wineries and companies that would not have shown such care and concern. We love their wines and family integrity and will be Miguel Merino wine drinkers for life! Plus, it's a lovely memory to drink their wines in Los Angeles and remember the wonderful people and winery where these wines were crafted!

We really enjoyed the museum's visit as well as the wine testing. Really nice wine (particularly the crianza) and the visit was very informative with lots of clear information about how to make wine! Plan at least five hours to see the whole thing!
