My trusty (or that could be rusty) translation app tells me that Cascata del Cenghen means Cenghen’s Waterfall in Italian. I won’t argue. Who or what Cenghen is or was is not clear but who/whatever they were, they have a jolly nice waterfall. One website describing the walk up here from Abbadia Lariana on the shores of Lake Como describes the waterfall as ‘the small treasure of Grigna mountain’, Grigna being the almost 8,000 foot mountain massif that the waterfall is on the lower slopes of. I won’t argue with the description either, as waterfalls go this is good one. A 30(ish) meter drop down a dramatic rocky escarpment erupting out of the surrounding trees into a turquoise pool of water. Fabulous. On a hot day this place can get quite busy apparently but we had the place to ourselves which was magical. We walked up from nearby Crebbio. The path is well marked and easy to follow but while there are no really huge climbs involved, it is very uneven underfoot so good walking shoes are essential. You don’t have to be an experienced mountain walker but if you struggle walking to the shops then you probably shouldn’t attempt this. The walk from Crebbio and back takes about 3 hours - it’s similar from Abbadia Lariana - and is such a good walk you really wouldn’t want to try and rush it. You hear the waterfall long before you see it - indeed you’re almost on top of it (or more accurately, under it) before it becomes clear through the trees. Great walk, fabulous mountains, wonderful waterfall.
