The most visited and largest of the Western Isles is the brooding Isle of Skye, a short ferry ride or bridge away from the mainland. Islay, home to prolific whisky production, is another gem. Highlights of the less visited Outer Isles include stark Lewis and the town of Stornoway, rugged Harris, with sandy beaches and tranquil Barra.

Carbost is a great place to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon, and The Old Inn is just the place to eat. They have configured the establishment with a one way system. Shame some patrons ignore the signage (but you get that everywhere). The food selections is great and the specials board is quirky, being mounted on an old mangle. We had a table outside and had good views to the east end of Loch Harport and onto The Cuillins. Table service throughout worked and was always a server nearby if we wished to add to our order. We had the Skye Gold, and Orange Juice and Soda(for the designated driver) to drink, and to eat fish and chips, and venison burger. Both were well sized portions.

This was right down the street from our rental. It is a small local pub, does get some tourists. Great place to unwind. A few beers on tap and an incredible whisky selection. They have every standard Islay whisky and a few bottles you can only find on Islay. Great little jukebox and the locals had a very eclectic mix playing. There was even one older lady who stopped in with her huge dog (I think it was a Husky). Definitely worth stopping at

We ate our lunch in the bar which had a lovely friendly atmosphere. The chap behind the bar was very welcoming and we felt that the COVID measures were well implemented and observed. We felt very safe. We both thought the food was fabulous and the portions generous. The scallop starter with black pudding and cider jus got the thumbs up from my husband and I enjoyed the Gravlax salmon. My main was venison with honey and Drambuie jus - it was absolutely delicious! The sea bass with saffron and pea cream also tasted fantastic. Final course of carpaccio of pineapple with chilli glaze and raspberry sorbet was the perfect end. It was expensive but we thought it was worth every penny and the service was excellent. We would definitely come back!
