There are not many places to get a proper meal in this corner of Cumbria, the Golf was recommened by our B&B as we were planning to explore the cost south of Bowness on Solway. It was welcoming , good value and lovely, which was indicated by the number of people eating. Also good for Gluten Free

The Lowther is a traditional country pub at the heart of the village of Mawbray. Ideally situated on the beautiful Solway Coast with views to the Western fells from the child and dog friendly beer garden.
This is a place I've been meaning to go to for a while. The reviews are great on here. A workmate recently went here on his way down from Silloth and gave it the thumbs up. So finally last Sunday I got my way, and after a day with my kids decided to pay the Lowther at Mawbray a visit with my partner. I'd worked up a healthy appetite so I was looking forward to a large scrumptious Sunday roast. The waiting staff and lady at the bar were good, and the best feature of our visit. Sadly the two Sunday lunches that we ordered failed to live up to expectation. In fact we've had much better TV dinners than what we received last Sunday, and this is the first time in seven years that my partner has left a meal partly eaten due to how inedible it was. My lamb dinner could have come straight from the budget range at Lidl, and the portion that I received suggests that it may have been a TV dinner replated. Five strips of fatty lamb, a couple of small potatoes, three chunks of carrot and instant gravy that was so watery it could have been poured from a teapot. Partners beef dinner was full of gristle, and of the same mediocre quality that mine was. Cling film around the plate suggests that it was nuked in the microwave, so at least it was hot, unlike my lukewarm offering. Words really can't describe just how crap this "meal" was. Prison food would probably be nicer.Let me state that I hate to complain, I really do, and it's rare that I do. I complimented the barlady on her service, however against my better judgement (and partners wishes) I complained on the night, and although I received a slightly sympathetic ear nothing was done and I was still charged £20 for two abysmal meals. Maybe the Lowther was having an "off day". Maybe their regular chef was off. Maybe new owners have taken over. I won't be chancing it again.I rarely respond to reviews, but feel on this occasion your comments are unfair. I am sorry you did not enjoy the food at The Lowther last Sunday. The business has not changed hands in 3 years and the chef was not off. I believe you came in looking for a steak dinner, which we do not serve on a Sunday. I can assure you non of our food is microwaved so I am not sure where the 'clingfilm' came from. All our roasts are served with 3 roast potatoes, mash, 3 vegetables and Yorkshire Pudding. I also apologies that the member of staff did not inform me or the chef that you had not enjoyed your meal, but as our waitress had checked on you during the meal and you said nothing and you had both eaten all of your meals, it is our usually policy to charge for the meals.

Family visit, once again a difficult choice from a changing menu. All looked wonderful, exceptional and fresh home cooked food. Ample plates and for a reasonable price. Staff very helpful.

We have heard good things about this pub/restaurant, especially their Wednesday steak night. We were not disappointed. We were greeted and seated by a very pleasant young lady and our drinks arrived within minutes, and our food order taken. We both had ribeye steak and stilton sauce, which were excellent. These were accompanied with the usual trimmings, but we were especially pleased with the big dish of home made chips. At less than £30 for us both, we highly recommend and will definitely be returning.
