Discover our farmgateâ¦In the pretty seaside town of American River, you will find some of the best-tasting Pacific Oysters in the world! Now also farming the native Angasi Oysterâ¦â¦.the only place on Kangaroo Island where you can taste a KI Native oyster!
We were a group of locals and a visitor from cairns and keen to enjoy KI's wonderful seafood as treat for our resident friend's 60 birthday. What a disappointment. We ordered an $150 seafood platter being told it was good for 4 to 6 people. We expected a generous amount of oysters, seeing as they were being grown a matter of metres away and an array of yummy local fish products. What we got was 2 dozen oysters. One marron. A plastic container with maybe 18 finger nail sized smoked oyters in oil. 12 abolini - delicious but tiny. 2 garlic breads and a pile of coleslaw. And dried figs ... what the?! No fish, despite KI being the whiting capital of Australia and no calamari, despite this being a significant fishery by product in this region. I love KI and its seafood is a real draw card for tourism. These guys could have bus loads of people bee lining to them with only a bit more generosity and effort. Or just dont charge city prices for a pretty ordinary product.

The Cafe is beside the Rebuild Independence Boathouse and has a wonderful water view. The Cafe, only a few months old, serves organic and fairtrade coffee. The lunch menu includes locally caught fish including King George Whiting. On Wednesday and Saturday
We stopped by for a coffee and a sandwich. I had a BLT which was ok and the wife had a toasted ham cheese tomato sandwich.. both had a coffee which was nothing special. A bit pricey but thereâs not much else around. Okay but just regular food.
meritorious - frequented by locals - friendly fine fare - prompt service - uphill location lacking flashy particularities - a cool August evening visited perchance a family affair- the fish, the prawns, the wine, the salad, the smiles exceptional in antipodean standards

â Modern bistro with a focus on seafood and South Australian produce with ocean views.
Degustation menu was the only dining option on the friday nite we ate here. Approximately 8 courses served and the standard was excellent. $89 for the food and an extra $59 for the matched wines. Fairly standard prices for such a meal. The crispy barramundi was a standout and cooked perfectly. A couple of courses that I would not have usually tried eg. black pudding croquettes but for the most part thoroughly enjoyed them all. The staff were very attentive and professional with good knowledge of the dishes on offer. Its located up high and the views in the daytime or at sunset would be incredible
